I thought I would post the beginning picture of the Janissary pegged to work bases and primed. The nest step is the base coat for the flesh, Humbrol #121 followed by doing the flesh in tube oils. While the flesh is drying I will base coat the various parts of the clothing in the appropriate colors. I won't go into the historical aspect as Roc has done a beautiful job of providing historical background to this figure in his vbench. I don't want this to be felt as a competition as we are both using different techniques and we each have our own style and interpretation.

    hello Guy,

I am glad that you gonna pick it up. I am looking forward to see yours finished.
What i wanted to see is the same figure done by two different master painters. Then see with my own eyes the different approach, techniques etc.
What a nice opportunity to see Roc and you painting the same figure.

Hey Guy, I'm glad you decided to start the Janissary, I can't wait to see your version of it, I know you will do a fantastic job and I’m looking forward to your next step. ;)

    Keep up the good work.

    Roc :)

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate the encouragement. I will be away from the bench for a few days but look forward to bringing the Janissary to life upon return,

John: The Red figure in the back ground is the Harton Mountain Man bust. I am slowly working on the beadwork of the rifle case.

Here is a picture of the workbench and some projects that are in the works. I have not taken pictures due to the poor quality pics my camera takes.

I have base colored parts of the uniform today and will leave the white stockings and turnbacks until I have finished the red pants and orange vest. The flesh will be done in the morning along with blending and shading the red and orange colors. The blue sash will have cream colored stripes diagonally in the sash.

Thanks for the encouragement Keith. I will post a pic of the wet flesh after I have done it tomorrow. Then it goes into the case for drying for a couple of days.

Looking forward to see how your Janissary turns out, Guy ! (y)

... Eh ... Now, about that old Series 77 US Dragoon on your bench ... could we get pictures of that one too when it's finished ???

Thanks Johan..............I will certainly post a pic or two of the Dragoon when I have him finished. I didn't start a sbs on him because of not having a good camera for close-ups.

Thank you Guy. It's a shame that this lovely Dragoon isn't available anymore isn't it? And the Amati one in 120mm is gone too ... Damn, why don't they make more ponysoldiers in 90mm or 120mm ... :(

I have the Amati 120 mm and also their 75mm Dragoon. Terry Worster also came out with several Dragoons which I have stashed in the closet. For those rainy days.

    Hi Guy,

Please excuse my flagrant lack of knowledge on the matter, but is your Janissary a Poste Militaire offering or is it from someone else? You and Rocco sure know how to start a trend. I was certainly thinking of adding a Janissary to my small collection, but you two guys have now made that a certainty.

You do some awesome work there, Guy, Can't wait to see it completed. (y)

PS,you need a digital camera my friend... ;)

Thanks Francis for your words of encouragement. It is a Poste Militaire 90mm (identical to Roc's) but we each are using our own techniques to paint him.

I do have a digital camera I am taking pics with, but alas, it is an older one that doesn't do well with close-ups. When the finished figure is done, I will have a good friend stop by with a newer digital and take some good pics.

My next step was to add the shadow and highlight colors over the base colors and blend the line between the two out. The pants were base colored with Floquil Signal red - shadow was weathered black - highlighted with daylight red. Now they will be highlighted with daylight red with white aded, The next step with the pants.

Now I have tackeled the orange jacket ( I have not done too much orange before and was aphrehensive ) My base color is Floquil reefer orange and I used Signal red for shadow and yellow for highlight. The two colors over the base color were blended together to remove the harsh line.

Here is the back of the jacket showing the top, above the sash blended and the bottom below the sash before blending the two colors of Red / yellow. I took this picture to show the difference before blending and after.

Here is both top and bottom blended of the jacket.

Here is the waist sash based colored in floquil prussian blue with weathered black for shadow and bright blue for highlight. Both colors were blended and shaded and now the sash will have to be highlighted several times after drying. With floquil, 12 hours is needed for drying.

I will leave the white trousers to last after highlighting the red trousers.

All comments are, as always welcome

... Eh ... It IS Poste Militaire I'm afraid, Francis ... they're out of business now, so if I were you I'd hurry to get your Janissary. ... Unless someone has taken over the moulds ?

And Guy, great job you're doing with Acrylics ... Looks like yours will be as colourful as Roc's, it will be interesting to compare the two finished figures.

After posting the last pictures I turned around away from the computor and began dry/brushing the pants. I use an old business card and drop several drops of daylight red into the center then add a couple drops of white and mix. I use the business cards because they soak up the oil carrier leaving the pigment to use. I then use a flat tipped brush and draw the semi dry paint away from the already drying mixture so as to get the pigment on the end of the brush. You can see where I draw away from the paint to remove any excess paint onto the business card. this is then brushed accross the seams of the pants along the highlight areas giving the line of paint between the dark ( weathered black ) and the highlight color ( signal red ) the final cover eliminating the line completely leaving a faint transition between red and black.

Now you can see why I leave the white stocking to after the red is done.

Now, tomorrow, if my back will let me, I will do the same technique to the orange jacket and the blue sash. I will also give the pants a second dry/brushing with a little more white added to the mix. I save the old business cards to ensure that I am lighter than the previous card mix.

Guy, my friend, so far so good, interesting technique, reminds me of the great Henry Lion.

Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next step.

    Cheers

Thanks for the vote of confidence Roc. I suppose this is from the techniques of quite a few old masters that I had the opportunity to observe for many hours. Hopefully today I will finally do the flesh and start the dry/brushing of the jacket.
