Two figures today - both from the Osprey MAA 293 - The Russian Civil War - The Red Army. First a train guard or a crewman from comrade Trotsky's armored train, 1919. I'm working from another of Andrei Karachtchouk's excellent illustrations as shown below. Kind of a lame pose, but the exotic nature of the uniform probably saves me. (I hope!) RED LEATHER. Kinky, huh, folks?! What - watch that comment way in the back there! This is a PG forum, OK?

This is WIP. I need, I think, about another weekend to finish him. The star on his budenka cap, a couple of uniform insignia, a Mosin-Nagant rifle that I'm converting from a Verlinden Mauser, and one or two bits plus some polishing and cleaning.
The base is a section of a road next to a cutaway of a railroad track. The track is made of basswood, the ties balsa, some gravel for the railroad bed, etc.

Roger Newsome has agreed to paint this one and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with that red leather.

Don't often here that Dan!

I think this is your best bit of sculpting yet. A very unusual and interesting subject.
I'm looking forward to painting this one.

Thanks fellas! Kind of a lame pose. I'm pretty dissatisfied with that aspect of the figure. Everything else turned out OK, I guess. Glad you like it! After I took the photos I finished and pinned on the two ammo containers and pistol holster. So the rifle and sling for both figures are left for next weekend.

    All the best,
    Dan

    Very nice work Dan

All that red leather would make this one a hell of a challenge to paint, but different shades of red will make him stand out really :)

Marc & Ray please don't make comments on the challenge of painting the red leather  Your beginning to make me worried. Seriously this will be a fantastic figure to paint.

Very well done, Dan. Interesting subject. Don't sweat the painting. If you've come this far, you will deal with it just fine. Let us see your progress.

Will do Pat. Hopefully I'll be starting this when I get home on my next leave in January.

Dan, That red leather uniform is going to look interesting once complete. The figure's torso seems a little flat when you look at it in profile. Another thing to keep in mind is the type of material/fabric being worn. A linen jacket would look different from a wool onw, and a wool one different from a leather one. A good pose is not easy to come by. I often find myself coming back to the relaxed pose hand on hip type of thing.~Gary

Many thanks Pat and Gary! Still some uniform insignia, a Mosin-Nagant rifle and this and that to do, but I think I can finish this weekend and then on to the next figure, the Dead Stretcher Bearer based on the Gilbert Rogers painting.

    All the best,
    Dan
