Thunderbolt Mountain Red Knight

Here my first attempt at painting a Thunderbolt Mountain 25mm Arthurian. These are great little sculpts! (And what a deal, they are only $4 each.) My husband likes that price.

I had some difficulty however, with the varnish. As you can see, it's a little shiny (and because of that, obscures some detail). I have no idea what went wrong. I used Vallejo brush on Matte Varnish, and it came out shiny. :( I tried spraying Dullcote on it a couple times to make it matte, but it didn't work. If anyone has any suggestion, please feel free to share.

The stripes on the lance could use some neatening up, but it isn't varnished yet. I have to finish basing him, but I'm considering making him part of a diorama, so I'm holding off until I decide for sure what I want to do with him. I have some more of these knights to paint. I could just have a huge melee scene.

Hey Wendy, from what I can see from picture it looks ok, do you have any close ups?

    Cheers

Wendy, The only thing I would suggest is letting whatever you initially coated it with dry for a few days or more. Then you could try a coat of something matt.~Gary

That was weird. This was just another version of the post below except the attachment didn't work, so I just deleted the text rather than be redundant. Something about a flood error.

Thanks for the comments. I brushed on the matte varnish in late January (I was going to take it to the competition on Jan. 29), then tried the Dullcote about a week later. I have another brand of brush on matte varnish that seems to be my last hope. I hesitated to use it 'cause it's kind of old, but I'll have to give it a try.

I'm not sure if I can get too much closer of a close up... :)

The key with varnish is the quantity. If you will apply it by brush dilute it. It will still do the job and apply a thinner coat therefore making it less shinny. Same with spray, make sure to apply it by little dose from at least 30 cm away from the model. By little dose I mean don't spray continuously but only in little pssst of 2 seconds max.

Wendy, as a medieval/pre-gunpowder era enthusiast, I really like this little fellow. You have done a stellar painting job, irregardless of your finishing frustrations. I really like it. The horse is particularly good, in my opinion.

    Very nice work.

    Cheers,

    Kyle :)

Thanks for the tip, Mortarion, I'll give diluting it a try.

Kyle, thanks for the kind words. :)
