After my scratch version of the Pelt Merchant of Cairo I found inspiration in another ( romantic styled ) painting called A Cairo bazaar .
I'm not going to recreate the complete scene .
My version will hold 7 figures .
The first one is finished ( sculpting ): the camel driver in the back .
Again I used a mixture of green stuff (duro) and magic sculpt.
The camel is an old Heller model .
Some assecoires are from my spare parts box and the rest is scratch ( for certain parts I prefer the old milliput ).

In the picture above : a rough idea of the scene. At the bottom right the start of a new figure . It will be a begarre ( not in the original painting).
He will be sitting on the ground next to the ritchness of the merchant .

The first figure after priming ( with car primer) and ready to start painting .
I'm gonna be busy for a while .
    To be continued .

Wow Marc, I'm stunned. THis is really nice and a big project.
The painting is by John Frederick Lewis and is titled A Cairo Bazaar - The Della 'l'. Its a nice example of lighting techniqes in watercolor and he has a very impressive body of work. Several paintings of his would make excellent vignettes if you are interested in more. He likes this subject matter and seems to really be able to catch a feel and romantic vision of the setting. I'm actually kind of surprised that know one has done "The Pipe Bearer" as it just screams figure.

I look forward to your work.

I love orientalist paintings I only wish there were figures of this kind of subject matter on the market. This painting in particular just begs to be turned in to a vignette.
