Hey Guys,
I finally got around to painting the shield.
after it dries in the oven at 140 degrees for a couple of days,I will accentuate the highlights and deepen the shadows.

The shield is painted red,using the same color mixture as described in previous posts.

The wings and lightning bolts.
Base = cadmium yellow + Mars yellow.
medium shadows = base + violet.
Deep shadows = violet.
extreme shadows = purple.

The metal edgings and bossing on the shield are burnished as described in
previous posts.

I dirtied the bottom half of the shield while still wet with a mixture of Raw Umber+
Burnt Umber and transparent gold Ochre,I added more Gold Ochre and white into base to highlight.

Any recommendations for a first Roman fig for me to try? I have had my eye on the Pegaso 54 mm Roman Aquilifer and a few others from Soldiers and FM Benito.

I have just tidied up the shield a bit. I added the extreme highlights and deepest shadows,added a little more rust on the metal bossing and metal edgings.

Next I will attach the shield to the figure,mount in on a nice base and to the grounwork.
hopefully, time permitteng, I'll try to post some pictures by mid week.

A few points:

(1) The edge bindings on the shields were made of copper alloy (mainly brass, not bronze) - not iron. The attachment was by means of copper (nearly pure) rivets, which shows up as a quite distinct colour against the much more yellow colour of the bindings.

(2) The background colour, I would suggest, should be more rust red than scarlet. It's likely that these colours were iron oxide pigments (i.e. ochres) and these tend to be more rust-red than scarlet.

(3) The panels on either side of the central boss (tabulae ansatae) are generally thought to have contained the legion number. Logic suggests that these were black against the yellow background.

(4) The reinforcing strips on the rear side of the shield were made of wood, not metal. It's likely that they would have been painted the same colour as the rear of the shield (evidence for the red colour is slim, but Vegetius suggests that it would have been red.)

When i paint my figure ( it is in the grey army) I shell go with the comments from Caratacus. Seems logic.
