This is a project that I have wanted to do for a while. I still have not figured out how to make the balloon yet .

I want to have the steam engine have an erie green lighted glow. I spent today sanding and filling the hull.

that is some concept. The balloon could be made one of two ways. 1) make a wire frame (or wood for realism) and stretch a wet silk over it then let it dry and shrink b) blow up a real balloon and cover it in thin papier mache then pop the real balloon inside and remove from the heat source hole. You could then paint it however you like if using the papier mache or dye the silk before stretching it. I kinda want to see this thing come to fruition. neat idea.

    Woo- Hoo!

    Looks like fun!

    And different too!

I'd go with some of the ideas already mentioned - it may take a combination of techniques to get it right.....

Dont get discouraged, it's great to see something from 'outside the norm' for here!

    Cheers

Make a frame as Mike suggests and cover it in tissue paper and apply dope to taughten it or go to your local RC model aircraft supplier and get some of their special film, you secure it to your frame and apply gentle heat to shrink it down.
As for your eerie green glow I would suggest its down to how you deal with the reflections of the green light off the near surrounding structures and nearest lowest surface of the "balloon", although I think your image is more of a dirigible which I always think sounds better.
You can always cheat  by fixing a green LED in your "firebox" and let it sort out the eerieness!! ;):D
Good luck, you've made a good start, I look forward to seeing your progress.(y)

Kewl Beans, Cartman. Whoa. . .

    Yo Byron:

As Jamie says this looks like fun! And it is DIFFERENT. I always enjoy seeing
and hearing Planeteers come up with different ideas, traveling down the
"other" fork in the road, so to speak. And I really like your most creative
    idea, here.

And it reminds me of what a super exercise in "problem solving" this hobby
can be; definitely a great learning experience for our youngsters, as well as
for keeping oldsters like me active in the gray matter. Yep!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh, eager to see this ship take off, matey!

Check the paper modelling sites for a dirigible plan! paper would be very very light!

    Bryon,
don't be too afraid of doing a blimp - it is actually easier then it seems, just a bit fiddly.....

Most of on here are 'cross - hobby' - we come from a variety of backgrounds, or have done different stuff that will help you.

I think it is a good idea, and I encourage you to continue with it!

Trust me, you'll feel so good about doing a project like that.

All that is needed is a few ways of putting the idea together in a way you can use!

    Cheers,
