I have been working on this for about 12 months on and off, and I am nearly up to the painting stage. The figure is based on the painting by John Collier which is in the Coventry Museum.

The horse is 75mm bare horse from Pegaso, which luckily was the exact same pose as the one in the painting, except for the neck which I moved slightly. The horses caparisone (coat) is made from Milliput. I am currently working on the bridle and bit.

The figure is completely molded from Milliput on wire armature, (sorry no pics of that) I mixed superfine white milliput with superfine black milliput to get the grey color, I find it is the best color to sculpt in.

I plan to finish painting by end of January I will post more images as work progresses.

I always liked the idea of bringing the painting art to the modelling world. I love the work you´ve made so far, nice anatomy and hair.
If you allow me a comment, I see the soles too flat, they could look more real giving them a bit of curve.

Excellent idea and wonderfully sculpted! I look forward to see this painted.

I have also one remark: her behind is pointing forward while on the painting it is slightly curved backwards.

This is slightly off-topic, but I find it interesting that in the painting she's riding "astride," as I thought it was convention that women rode "side-saddle," as astride was considered "unladylike." Or is my opinion based in a given time period, specifically the Victorian era?

I find it great. Some anatomical remarks:
You must give here (i think there is enough putty on that part) more lordose on the lumbal part of the spine. If you scrape the putty off then you make there more lordose (curved to the innerside). Do it just above the saddle and it looks more convincing then.
Then put here more backwards into the saddle.

Great idea and great execution. You can make a fragment of architecture as in the picture? Enjoy our great vignette.

I am still working on the figure, i have to re-position the feet, do some work on here spine, and reseat her into the saddle,
The image below is the decorative plate on the horses Bit, the female master mold is in milliput, then is stamped out in Milliput and trimmed

Wonderful idea! Very nice scupt Will you try and paint in it in the neo-classical style as well?
  16. Firestorm Active Member

I will try and paint it to look like the painting
Lady Godiva died sometime between 1066 and 1086, After the Norman Invasion. The side saddle was not developed until 13c. Up to then women rode astride like men. The side saddle was not commonly used until 16c. I also doubt the horse would have been wearing the caparison shown in the John Collier painting, it seems to detailed for that time period
