Hi Jon, my only advice is to try them all and choose the type, size and subject matter that you most enjoy. This is a hobby and its all about fun. Planet Figure welcomes figure modellers of all types and interests.

have you ever seen judges looking at 28mm figures because of their scale they have to hold the figure and look at it sometime using magnify glasses because of the fine detail .

    Buy everything...
    all sizes...
    all periods....
    all manufacturers
even things you know you may not ever finish painting them
    every week.

Then take over the spare room and make it a man cave with storage space for every model ever made and enjoy.....

that's what works for us lot :)

    Welcome

    Paul.

    Try this company:-

    www.modeldisplayproducts.co.uk

Martyn has a range of fantasy figures, creatures, basing materials and plinths.
The figures range from 28mm-120mm all resin and includes small busts too there are different ranges including 'Axfaction' and the 'War Griffon' brand.

I have bought a lot of things from Martyn.
    You will get great service.

Just paint everything fella. I do sci fi, fantasy and historical and enjoy the change of styles. Last month I painted a Chinese coin, the month before I tackled a large plastic octopus bath toy. Basically, anything that can't escape from my desk.

    Welcome!

As others have said, paint what you find most interesting. I paint a little bit of everything (historical, fantasy, and sci-fi). Most competitions have categories open for all of these genres. I'd say finding 28mm figures in competitions is more common with sci-fi and fantasy stuff, as a lot of the companies making the figures work in that scale. But, there are also some very nice 54mm and larger fantasy and sci-fi figures. Andrea Miniatures has two lines, Warlord Saga for 54mm fantasy and Dark Nova for 54mm sci-fi. Scale75 produces a lot of fantasy and sci-fi stuff in 75mm. Ares Mythologic has their Draconia line with some neat 54mm and 70mm fantasy figures. Nocturna is makes some very neat fantasy and sci-fi in larger scales. And Nuts Planet is another one worth checking out.

But, there's nothing wrong with the gaming figures and the companies you mentioned. Kingdom Death, Infinity, and Dark Sword have some very neat figures too.

Welcome Jon - did you bring Purdey too??? Do consider historical figures too and if you've little reference material ask here and usually someone has the answer. This is also true of techniques. Paul'a advice is good imho.

    Cheers

I am very sorry Paul. No aspersions were being cast just I made that entry on my iPad and predictive typing kicked in - it should have read Paul's... Oh the shame of it...

Actually I know you've got broad shoulders and so you don't care anymore than I do at being called Henrietta.

    Cheers
