    Hi guys

This is my second incarnation in the world of figures. A few years ago, I found The Basement which inspired me to have a go at, what I believe, is the hardest form of modelling there is and the nearest there is to a real art form.

Although I was, and still am, rubbish at painting figures, I have never forgotten the warm welcome, encouragement and support I got from the members of that forum. Although I am useless at remembering names but, I can never forget Kevin Peart, NapoleonPeart, and the amazing support he, as well as others, gave me not only on the forum but also when I had the pleasure of meeting many of them at Figure World, I believe it was the first one but I may be wrong.

It appears I also joined Planetfigure way back in April 2011but things went pear shaped for me in terms of modelling, and many other things in life too, which resulted in me giving up the hobby totally. I had a bit of a comeback in my original modelling genre of armour modelling which didn't last long just over a year ago and again quite recently. Don't know why but I just cannot get going again.

However, figure painting, which I am worst at, has always been hovering on the edge of my mind all through these strange days so I decided to put all my kits away and get back to trying to learn the gentle art of painting.

So, here I am, back again. Still no better as a painter but possibly in a better frame of mind, more patient more able to accept I am not going to become anything like a master painter overnight, if ever at all but I am OK with that. I can be happy being as good as I can get however bad that is.

I am sure if Mr Peart reads this, and remembers me, he will be muttering 'Oh God, not him again' but I doubt he will remember lol

I have been looking through the amazing work on here, and it really is amazing, so I know I will get lots of inspiration. I don't have a particular subject matter or period in mind so I will be dabbing paint on just about anything to learn techniques. Really looking forward to it :)

Lol, busts are best, how could I forget that :). I am starting small and working my way up. I will try to get to Figure World so hope to see you there.

Here is my first serious attempt at a 1/35 figure that must have been stripped and repainted four or five times back then. This time it will be kept as it is for a while so I can measure how I am getting on. Hope I have got the picture thing right.

Welcome back Graham! Glad you are going to give figures another shot. Its only by trial and error and perseverance that anyone's painting improves. Granted there will be degrees of frustration and choice language along the way, however that comes with the territory! ... I should know!.

As you see! Nap is still here, despite our best efforts to locate a remote area of the planet with little chance of internet connection, in which to relocate him!;)

If there is any initial advice that I could give is start, building up a little library of figure painting manuals and SBS's. There are some good ones available, more so now than previously.

    Regards,

    Hi Graham,

And welcome back to figure painting. There's no substitute for experience but these days you can certainly accelerate your learning through site like pF and reading books like the ones shown by Mark. I hope you are inspired to get stuck in. The best way to learn and get inspired is to ask questions and seek advice.

Thanks Tony. Yes, I am inspired and raring to go. I have a few 1/35 I am playing with just for the fun of it and I have a 32mm fantasy figure on its way to have a look at. To try the tutorial linked above, I have ordered the paints used in the article and have stripped the face of the Young Miniatures Crusader in Jerusalem Bust that I had been messing about with using the Andrea Flesh set which always look a tad orange to me so looking forward to trying the Vallejo.

I also have a couple of Mil-Mart semi flats that I will be practicing blending and shading techniques on. Fortunately, I still have my 3 W&N Series 7 brushes and a nice little set of Kolinsky Sable brushes bought from BrokenToad recently so it is time to set up the wet pallet and get stuck in :)

Graham! ..Flats are a completely different mind-set, of approach and painting! ..are you sure that this aspect is right for you ?? As they are not as easy as they look! .. However 'Billyturnip', is the guy to ask if you wish to venture down this route!. As these, and 1/35th stuff .. are pole's apart. ;)

Oh you are so right Mark, flats look deceptively simple but are definitely not lol. I did have a go at a few when I first started and, to be honest, enjoyed them. To be brutally honest, they were rubbish lol but semi flats/semi rounds like Mil Mart offer a largish surface to practice blending on. Blending and glazing is something I just could not get my head around back then. I now understand the principle, I just need the workflow to get the hang of it. This is one of the Mil Mart ones I did back then which I want to re do once I get better at the blending. image.jpg

Tried them, all I managed was to mix poo brown on everything I tried ;-). Will certainly give them another go at some point but it is Acrylics that I am starting to slowly get the hang of so I will concentrate on them for the time being.
