    Greetings all:
This beauty is Andrea's 90mm German stormtrooper, and one of my Chicago purchases. I have posted him here in the "not yet done" section because I am not sure if this needs a little more weathering. That is to say I know he needs more weathering, but I'm not sure how far I should go with it. I am almost convinced that I don't want to coat the bottom half with mud and cover up all the work I did painting that area. but I'm almost equally convinced that the present state isn't up to snuff. So if you would all care to leave an opinion and perhaps a little weathering tip, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance everyone.

Looking at the photos, it appears the camera has washed out some of the colour and lightened everything up. The figure is darker in tone when seen with the naked eye.

    Hi Glenn

He has a suitably somber look mate :)
Detail well painted, but reckon you've got to go with some dirtying up as he looks to sterile to have such a grimace on his face ;)

Right side of beard, under neck looks a bit dark in photo, perhaps a little flesh to pull it back may help.

Neat looking barbed wire - did you make it?

    Trust this helps.

Merry Festive Season to you & yours from me & mine :)

Hi Mike. Thanks for your feedback. I hadn't noticed the beard, so I'm going to have another look at the figure under a good light and see if there is some inconsistency. I will be putting the dirt on him for sure, but as for his grimace, I just thought that was the standard Teutonic look of determination. The barbed wire is indeed my own construction, Made from 26 gauge craft wire. Thanks again for the comments, they truly do help, and Merry Christmas to you as well.

    Glenn,

Very nice looking figure! I have a suggestion. If you are on Face Book, go to Last Cavalry Historical Toys and Hobbies. Dave Youngquist's main area of interest is WWI. In his Photo Albums you will find this figure and others with well done mud effects. Also, he has, in his products for sale at http://www.lastcavalry.com/ dry mud (which I am itching to try) and fresh mud. Use his search engine on the site. In addition, he carries Jon Smith Modellbau products, look at those for mud effects and go to the John Smith Modellbau website for excellent examples. https://www.jonsmith-modellbau.com/

If you can come across the dvd, All quiet on the Western Front (the new version in color), the scenes in the later part of the movie show the actor in the shell holes and in the trenches with excellent muddy effects. These are scenes from after his RR at home when he comes back to the front lines.

The Reality in Scale mud looks very promising to me but, I have not used it yet so, this is all conjecture. Hopefully this helps a bit.

    Merry Christmas!

    Kevin D.

Outstanding Kevin! That's the effect I'd like to try for as it doesn't completely obscure the uniform beneath. Thanks very much for the info and links, I will be sure to check out some of these suggested products.

Hi Glen,i like your version a lot, with regards to the weathering, you don't need to add lot of mud if you don't want, what I would suggest is you use some earth colours within your uniform mix, this will show the trousers weathered and dirty without adding mud, just play around with the mixes until your happy.
Weathering is always a little controversial with other modelers, some like it and some don't,i personaly like to portray a soldier in his natural battlefield environment, however weathering dosent need to be over the top and people will still appreciate your great brushwork, this was an Andrea figure I painted a few years back just to give you an idea of what I was on about.

Glenn, I would focus your weathering on those parts of the uniform that are most commonly in contact with the ground. And therefore most likely to be dirty- knees, elbows, bum and boots. A combination of darker, wet mud over lighter dried mud would be most effective.

Thanks Tony and Brian. Both of your suggestions are most welcome, and I hope to incorporate them into the final version, which I plan to work on over the Christmas break.

    Good work Glenn.
For the dirt I can recommend REALITY IN SCALE mud in a pot.
You can brush it on, and it looks like mud immediately. Let it dry for a few hours and you can go for the next layer if needed. It's great stuff. (maybe because Olaf is also a Dutch Guy)

    Hi Glenn ,
If I may help as well, regarding the weathering of your figure ,take a look on some of the pictures below , german WWI figures in 120mm which you can find (among others) in my Vbench.

Many thanks Marc, will look into this product, as I believe there might be a local shop that carries Reality in Scale. Thanks also Fokion, I am keeping all the photos for a reference.
