    Hey Guys!

Here is one of my current sculpting projects for Warriors. He will be a Wehrmacht Officer reading a map, magazine, flyer or what have you.

This is a figure that Bob Letterman asked me to do so I figured I would get started on it right away, besides I have always wanted to do a German subject!

As I was working on him and finished the first leg I thought I might as well show you guys how I work. The following four steps will show you the process I do with just about everything I sculpt.

#1 Roll the putty onto the armature
#2 Smooth the putty with a wet brush
    #3 Add the rough folds
#4 Smooth out the rough folds and refine them

Here are the pictures of this process.

The first thing I do is apply the putty to the leg, and roughly roll it out with a round tool that has a cone shaped pointy end.

When I got the amount of bulk that is required, the putty is smoothed out with a size 1 brush that is moistened with water.

Now that the area is smooth it is time to add the rough folds. For the smaller folds a small needle inserted in a wooden handle was used, and for the general and larger folds a tool from the Squadron sculpting set was used, it is like a double edged knife, think two X-Acto #10 blades but blunt side to blunt side (just a whole lot smaller!!).

Once I get the folds pretty much the way I want them I use a wet brush to smooth the fold up as well as 'sharpening' the edges. When this is done, more folds are usually added then the initial rough folds. Once all the folds are finished I like to use a small rounded blade (small X-Acto #11 blade) and make some small lines to show wear and add some more detail to it. And here is what the final result looks like!

Once it is cured I will go over the folds again with a sharp small round blade (again the mini #11 blade) and sharpen the folds more where needed.

Awesome little sbs Anders. :) hopefully you will go through till the end, so we can have an idea the effort that you put when you sculpt a figure. :) Keep up the good work my friend.

Anders: where'd the armature come from? Your own or commercial?

Thanks Kisifer! I will show progress as I go along!

    Francesca,

The mannequin I use is the same one Bill uses, I belive it was made by Mike Good back in the day. Not 100% sure about that though.

Here is what it looks like on one of Bills current Sculpts.

    Thank You Laurent!

With the help of Mr. Bill Chillstrom I am doing my best to learn to sculpt better!

    Hey Guys!

    Here is a small update:

The lower part of the tunic is finished, maybe some tweaking here and there will be nessessary once its all said and done but the sculpting part is finished. First time for me to make pockets like this and i am prety pleased with how they turned out. I still need to add holes in the belt and add buttons to the pockets.

Will do a short SBS on how I did the pockets on the the upper torso pockets soon.

    Hey Guys!

Here is the promised SBS on how I made the pockets. These top pockets are so small and to add the seam lines were a real pain! I acctually redid the right pocket about 5-7 times, took a lot of time!
    Here is what I did:

First I rolled out some putty and cut them to shape roughly the size of the pockets

Then I applied these to the figure and it was cut to size. The seamlines were added with an X-Acto blade. It was cured after htis stage.

The pleates or stripes down the center of the pockets were added in the same manner as above from rolled out putty. It was cured again after these were in place.

The flaps prooved to be a tad more tedious to do!

First step was to add a rough slab of putty where the flap would go, then was cut to size. The curved lower portion of the flap started out as a V then roughed out with an X-Acto blad and then smoothed out with a moist fine tipped brush. The seamlines were added with the knife blade as well, which was quite the tedious task and very frustrating. If you look at the last picture, it shows the final version of the right pocket, the left pocket have allready been sanded down and refined. The right pocket will recive same treatment once cured.

Hope this is of some help! It acctually helped me a lot doing this because I had to rethink each step as Im typing this up, which helps in making the process more solid in ones mind, which in turn makes it easier to do next time!

This was a first time for me to make pockets like these, and if anyone have a better way to make these things I would love to learn of them!

Great looking figure Anders......I admire your ability to sculpt in that size, let alone do such a super job when you paint them.

    Dear Anders Heintz

I liked your work with the pockets a lot .
Congratulations for your determination, is really very difficult to sculpt this pocket type.
I am trying to sculpt the pockets but it is very difficult.
I have some figures Verlinden german officer and I observed that the seam lines of the pockets are very perfect ...
I think the pockets are sculpted with stamp type.
    Maybe a metal stamp ...
Do you know some thing about stamps to sculpt details?
    All the best

    Hola Orlando,

Im not sure that they used a stamp, the sculptor probably tweaked the pockets until they were perfect. Just keep trying, and you will get something that is looking good sooner or later.
