Spent my first painting session yesterday on the helmet and laid some oils onto the crest.
The helmet is getting towards something I like,i need to tweak it a little with some more metallic and oil shade before its finished,i wont attempt any other painting until ive nailed this and the crest.
The beauty of all these metalics on the market now is you can play about with them and get some real nice effects.
I have been using Dark Star metalics now for about 2 years and I love them, another reason I really like them is because I can work with my oils and it dosent affect them in any way.

The bust is beautifully sculpted by carl and exceptionaly cast by graham,i didn't have to do hardly any clean up either, just a slight minimal flash line down the raised right arm.

    Nice one Brian. :)
I think it was you that recommended Darkstar in a different thread and I bought some recently to try out - got to admit I really like them so far. Used the silver and just tried the bronze (which is quite coppery in tone) They are very smooth and don't have that 'glitter' effect that I disliked in the Vallejo/Andrea ones. Now to paint up some armour to give them a real challenge . . . . .

    Great.
Had the Darkstar metallics in my hand last weekend. Seen much in the figure world from this in combination with oils.
If I see your result it's time to pick them up.
Can you give more information how you get this done.

Great start Brian. I’ll be following closely for some tips as I’ve got their full mounted version in the grey army.

    Thank you marc,
Once the darkstar acrylics are laid in marc I shade the deeper areas of the metals with the appropriate oils, for example, when I'm painting a metal cuirass,I use darkstar BAROQUE as a base and then lighten it with small amounts of darkstar silver to lighten it,the shading of the cuirass I use Prussian plus oil paint, sparingly and build the shade up,steel or metal shaded with Prussian blue gives the steel a blue tint, you blend as you would normally, and you can start laying the oils on after about 10 min of the acrylic drying.
With all different types of metal,it's a mater of trial and error and trying different things techniques, darkstar also do a Prussian blue ink / wash which looks very good.
