PeteH - The color formula I use is right from a Verlinden Publication back in the late 80's - early 90's. Here is the basic mix of colors and steps.

    Paint Mixture:

    20% Burnt Sienna
40% Yellow Ochre............Mixed all together and applied wet to flesh area
    40% Raw Umber

With so many figures coming out in yellow resin the mixture can be applied right over the yellow resin. If the figure is in another color, gray for example or white metal I prime the area with Floquil R9 primer and then give it 2 coats of Humbrol #121.

The second step is taking a flat wide brush and removing the base mix off, constantly wiping the brush on a paint rag, switching to a clean dry brush frequently, allowing the yellow color to show through on the highlighted areas.

Next we apply Cadium Yellow applied to all the highlighted areas created by removing the base mix with a flat wide brush and applying Cadium yellow to these areas

After waiting for one hour to allow the pigment to work into the base mix, the yellow is blended into the areas where the base mix shadow is.

Next we apply Titanium White to the same areas we applied yellow and again wait an hour for the pigment to set with the base and yellow.

Now the white is blended into the previously applied yellow and base mix.

Next a dot of Cadium red is applied to the lower lip and carefully blended and also a dot of red to each cheek is applied and blended out into the high cheek area.

    Hope this helps

In another article in my vbench, it shows the actual steps applied right over a bust.

The main part of the Captain is done with touch-ups and weapons remaining. The sholder joints were finished off and the final dry-brush of daylight red with several drops of white applied over the entire coat. The waist sash stripes were shaded and a gold stripe added in the middle of the blue stripe. The waist buckle still needs a satin coat and the scabbard attached.

Now is the time to lay out the scene and start on the groundwork. I have decided to back off one figure and remain at 4 pirates instead of 5. The 5th was overkill and crowded the scene too much. Let me know what you think of the scene so far.

The groundwork was poured tonight requiring 2 mixes. I use "Sculptamold mixed with elmers glue. AFter pouring with a small artist's trowel I sprinkled heavily with small granuals of sand and gently taped the area with my finger. Because the Sculptamold was so thick in areas I will let it set for 2 days before painting with acrylics. I decided not to use Palm trees as they were 1/35th scale and looked too short for the scene. I instead decided to have many dead palm fronds alying about the ground.
