Hey all

I'd been working on this pair through November and have at the moment put it aside for another piece as I found myself getting very frustrated.
The piece is a 75mm pair of French Zouaves during the Franco-Prussian War, sculpted by Moz for Ellies Miniatures.
I don't know why but I've struggled with this piece from the get go.... right from figuring out the preassembly sequence to working the whites to first assembly of completed parts. It's been a challenge to say the least. I took a step back to avoid throwing the whole mess out the window... I'll go back to it with fresh eyes in the new year.

The reds are awesome and I'm looking forward to see this piece done in the future. We discussed about this piece during our last meeting and the only thing that I can say is to hold the line and finish it when you are ready.

The reds don't bother me near as much as the whites... I'm not too mad at the pantaloons on the wounded fella but I had a bitch of a time with the gaiters on both figs. I'm gonna have to go back and do them again I think.

They look pretty good so far Colin but you're probably following the best course of action by putting them aside if that's the way you are feeling.
It might work if you stop thinking about the white parts as being white, sounds daft I know but bear with me. Look upon the trousers as either grey or beige and lighten and shade accordingly, paying most attention to the highlights.

It doesn't hurt to put a project aside if inspiration flags, then come back and look again with fresh eyes. We've all been there, I'm sure. This is looking good so far, much like the painting it's taken from.

Hi Colin , glad you stock with it mate it's a hell of a kit but worth it in the end. you have done a great job so far keep it up I think we have all had that moment/ I'm still working on a vignette I started a year ago keep going back to it then putting it down I will get it finished one day.

Just keep going Colin. It's projects like these that bring the most satisfaction in the end. It's basically two figures so it should be more work than the average project.

I like Roger's advice. White becomes easier if you only use white for highlights and not for the base. For the gaiters I suggest a sandy base colour as I figure they would gather a lot of dirt.

Don't forget some blood on the wounded fellow, otherwise it would seem they are dancing (and that probably wasn't allowed for men back then).
