Here is my new work that i started a few days ago. It's the British Officer 1815 by Andrea. Very nice figure with not a lot of cleaning. After a few hours of cleaning the moulding seams (very fine ones) i glued the base with the figures main body and also the plume on the helm. I blue tacked the base and started the priming. I applied a quite thin first layer which you see in the picture and i'll let it dry for a day or a bit less. I may apply another layer tomorrow. So here is the first step. The main figure primed. My plan is to undercoat with the main colors the figure and then add the sword case and the hands. But that's something that i will show you in the next steps. For now:

I look forward to seeing this develop Xenofon. What type of primer do you use?

I use simple Humbrol matt white enamel No. 34 Guy. I brush it in thin layers. This one is the first one and maybe i will apply a second one tomorrow.

Hello everyone,
Here i am again, with the next step of the British Officer. After i let the primer get dry for one day i started undercoating most of the figure. I used Humbrol enamels close to the oil mixes that will be used for the main painting in the near future. At this stage i cared mostly for the main parts of the body, like trousers, face, hat, and coat. I tried to undercoat as carefully as i could so it gets easier when it comes to oils. So here is the pic of the figure undercoated.

Hello again guys,
After a lot of shading and highlighting i finished the pants of the Officer. I used oils and the main mix was Titanium White, Mars Black and Payne's Grey. For highlights i was adding Titanium white. The deep shadows are Mars Black straight from the tube. I really like heave shadows and i hope i didn't overdid it. The bottom part of the pants i used Burnt Sienna as a main color and for the highlights i added Yellow Ochre. Here are the pics.

I have finished the face of my British Officer, so here I am again. Well for my main flesh mix i used oils of course. A mix of Titanium White, Yellow Ochre and Burnt Sienna in approximate proportions 5:3:1.5 accordingly. The shadows were done with Burnt Sienna straight from the tune, while the highlights with Titanium white and ochre in the main mix. It's really hard to work in faces at 54mm and i guess i will need a bit of practice (this is my first figure after 6 years away from the hobby). Firstly i applied the Sienna in the shadow areas followed by the highlights. After the blending the main mix was added and blended with the rest. The hard part was the eyes, that i tried them twice (I'm still not satisfied with them). Again, practice practice practice. Well here are the pics of my results.

Okie fellows, in this update i will present you the jacket of this British officer. It was done with oils and my mix was Alizarine Cripson, Cadmium red medium and vermilion light. The proportions were more or less 2:6:9 accordingly. I firstly applied the shadows that were made with Alizarine added to the main mix, till i got a nice dark red color. The highlights were also applied after that by adding more vermilion into the main mix. Then the main mix was applied to the rest of the areas and the blending started. To be honest i'm not really satisfied with the contrast, so i may tone up the shadows and highloghts a bit. Anyway here are the pics so you can tell me your opinion.

That is an awesome figure! Great 'canvas' to learn on. I would suggest that you observe the figure under the light to see where you should place the higlights and shadows. You are going in the right direction though!

The main problem that I can see is that you use the same shadow color for all areas, there should be a difference between the deeper shadows and the lighter ones.

Also, now remember that I am not an oil painter, but I was told that I over blended my oils when I did use them. It looks like you are doing the same thing on the skins, as it is fairly monotone. Let's see some of you oil painters out there chime in and help him in the right direction. The face just needs some more contrast to it.

You are right on the shadow colors Anders, i think that it needs another lighter tone of shadow and also the same with the highlights.This is a come back figure, after 6 years of inactivity, so i guess that i will make some progress as i practice more. Thanks for your advice man.

Here is an update of my British Officer. The figure is mainly done. Missing the hands with the sword, the sword case with it's straps and also the groundwork. As you can see the trousers are weathered along with the light weathering of the jacket. The painting quality is not at the high standards that i'm used to see in this forum, but for a first figure i'm quite happy with the result. I'm slowly getting the hang of the oils, and i hope that i will get improved. Anyway, here are a few pics so you can also judge and comment. Thanks in advance.

Very nicely done. The only suggestion that I'll make is that you could deepen the shadow between items. For example, the waist sash and tunic are similar colors. So, you could apply a deeper shadow between the two. I hesitate to use the word "outline" but that is what is comes too. The same goes for the buttons and chest belt.

The pants are very well rendered. Good shades and highs. I like the shako, too!

Thanks for the advice Keith.. I also noticed that the parts that you mentioned need some outlining. Shall i use black?? or a deep red would do?

Good question... You have several options but I would receommend strongly that you experiment ahead of putting it on the figure. You could use brown madder alazarin, van dyke brown, or even sepia if you for the deepest shadow. For the browns, I like to apply and then feather out with a clean brush.
