Ah here I am again :)

at the IPMS Nationals my very good ( and old ) friend Ray saw the US Navy Diver bust in the competition and being of a boaty/naval/floaty things in general kind of way, asked me to do one for him.... ;)

So a quick email to SKMinitures, a couple of phone calls and a very short time later i received a well packaged model from Andrea.

As always from this manufacturer the kit covers the full spectrum of standards! the resin is horrible! slipage, flash and tired moulds. the white metal is superb and the fittings are beautifully cast and cleaned up easily.

thats a lot of bits for one model!

so once i had it all under-coated i worked out a layout, Ray and I had decided that the helmet would be off and I want to display it with the bust, this is roughly how i decided to do it. The final version will be decided as i add all the hoses and pipes.

i slightly altered the position of the head to get rid of the rigid symetrical look and started painting. this is a long way from finished, but seems to be going in the direction i wanted...........

slightly altered my usual mix to get a darker and browner look to the face

    Base AV 139 Mahogany sand

    mid GW Dwarf Flesh

    High AV 017 Basic skintone

Wash1 AV 050 Dark prussian blue ( eye sockets and beard )

Wash2 GW blood red ( nose, cheeks and ears )

Transitons are softened with AV 020 Sunny Skintone

still to add are the very top highlights in AV 006 Light flesh

and the eyes need a bit of work yet

    ;)

as ever, comments, crits and corrections are most welcome

When your piece is completed will the helmet be on ?

If so, are you taking special considerations for extreme highlighting and shadowing on the face for being covered by the helmet?

I've always loved this bust from Andrea. I have it in the "army" and I always stop for a moment when perusing the collection for another piece to paint when I come across this kit. Looking forward to your version!

Nice job so far. Its really looking good. You know, I always wanted this bust but I wanted to do something a little different. I wanted to paint it up as a GI Joe with the Adventure Team from Hasbro in the mid 70's. But, after reading this thread I'm having second thoughts now. Was your decision to leave the helmet off heavily influenced by the resin castings? If a persone wanted to do this bust WITH the helmet on, would you reccomend it or not?

    Great start Mark.
I painted this wonderful model, too.
    I didn't put a helmet together.
However your construction technology is wonderful.
I expect your wonderful version very much.

Mark, great start to the face, looking forward to seeing what you do with the metallics and hoses, BTW does the kit include clear plastic for the helmet?

Pedro .... Not busy enough! i have been dithering about last few weeks :) and thank you!

Gordy .... no i'm going to display the helmet next to the bust, there were two collar options, one plain for the lid to go onto and the one i've used with the thread detail and the neck seal :)

Mark ... aye, they don't paint themselves ;) have a good christmasy thing and see you at first 2010 meeting :)

    Carl ... many thanks :)

Simon ... thanks ... the fit of parts is varied! the two helmet parts were pretty bad, big step all around and some bad casting, the rest is ok, but i would say this is a complex built and will stretch most modelers :)

    Steve ... thanks man :)

Jay ... thanks again and it is a great idea from Andrea :)

Jim ... this would be a great bust with the helmet on, i'm just really into painting faces so decided to go with the lid seperate, the GI Joe idea sounds cool. I would love to do this as a " Big Daddy " from Bioshock :)

Mitsutaka-san .... i read your post several times before starting this project! thank you! :)

    Marc ... thank you :)

    Tony ... many thanks :)

Ken ... thanks :) and yes there is a scratched bit of clear plastic supplied for glazing :)

    Update .........

    a productive day :)

added layers of sunny skintone and basic skintone, added some mahogany sand shade and repeated.

    finished the eyes too.

added lots of GW Blood red to the cheeks, ears and nose again, dropping more into the cheek creases and then repeated the previous step.

added a bit more blue around his jaw and finished the neck area.

it still needs some work to tighten it up, but it's pretty much there now i think, next is hair and brows and that wooly cap, that should pull some colour out of the face ( i hope LOL )

work continues on the helmet ............

i re-filled the last few dimples and scars on the seam of the helmet and filled a couple of bits on the body ( MS ). i then did the etched brass grates on the vision ports... ugh!

using black as the base for the metallics ... hence the blackness of the hat ;)

Funny that Mark, black will give you blackness.
Would you recommend it, due to the shoddy casting?
    Carl.

Carl ..... :) all the best mate.

re the black, i like it for metalics as you can built the colour up slowly ( and i want there to be lots of slight diferances between the parts for visual interest.)

for the shoddy castings i recomend filler, super glue, primer, more filler and a steady supply of coffee ... ;)

Metallics ..... i'm using AV and GW Acrylic metallics .... LOTS of thin layers and if doing it again i would undercoat the different parts in different undercoats, browns, reds etc.

blocking in at the moment .......... :)
