Hey All

This is a piece I started Friday... A Private of the Grenadier Company, 1st Bat. 17th Regiment of Infantry (Leicestershire), 1854. It's a 75mm resin figure from Fort Duquesne Miniatures. A really nicely cast piece, very little prep and nice crisp detail.
I'm going to place him in a trench section during the seige of Sevestopol, opposite the Great Radan (a large Russian emplacement) doing "Stag Duty".

I started with the face and shako. The shako has a felt body and leather top, peak and neck guard. At this point, the trousers only have the first watered down coat of the base blue mix.

Here the pants are done, including the red welt on the outer seam. The coat has the finished base coat of Carmine Red... It took about 3 very thin coats to get a good covering.

This regiment has white facings and white tapes... any ideas on how to make sure the different white parts are defined where they overlap... like the collar area?

Hi Colin,
Great start, out of the traps really quickly with this little gem.
For white on white; I try to look at the texture of the material you are trying to replicate.
Facings are of a woolen type material and even when new tend to come up slightly cream and get grubby very quickly. For this I use a touch of yellow ochre.
Tapes are made from worstead and tend to be on the grey side. For me a smear of Paynes grey is a favourite.
Leather and webbing is usualy whitened and other than weathering and marks from use wil be the whitest. For shadow a little burnt umber does it for me.

Nice work Colin.

I'm in the throes of a 43rd foot officer and they have white facings and I used a similar technique to Keiths but added a little sepia to the white on the facings and blue black for the braided lace.

Good to see you back in action my friend.
the base red looks great!
I am working on my swiss guard and paintning red is always a nice change out of my usual whites.

The advice on the whites is just what I was looking for... perfect. I didn't want the facings, tape and pipeclay to meld into one big blob of white. Couldn't decide whether to use different tones of white or use "outlining" to separate the white elements.
Feels good to be off the couch and back at the bench

Found this in the "clearance" box at The Sentry (great local shop in Toronto). Picked up a couple of other Fort Duquesne figs at the same time. They had a bunch of them, alot of doubles, but I dont recall if they had another one of these guys. Check their website... Joe and Greg can be a great help

Thanx for the kind words. Definitely no running... more of the ''double cane cluster-flop''. If your knee is getting wonky, take it from a vet of EIGHT knee ops, get it looked at before it goes too sour.
With all this home time, I hope to have this one covered by the end of this week... shy the base though.

Dug in a little more on this guy over the last couple of nights.
Highs and lows on the red coat done.
Medium blu on the canteen done.
Canteen strap has been based with Flat Brown.
Base coat of Brass has been applied to cap badge and shako fittings.
The white facings have the base and highs on (Base: White+Sky Grey+English Uniform)(Highs: White+Base twice then pure White). Haven't shaded yet.
The white tape has been based with Sky Grey.

Should have another installment tomorrow with all the whites done (including belts and straps), hopefully

Out of the gate this comes off like a pretty simple figure, but once you get into all the overlapping white elements... I'm starting to develope a pain just below the belt
