After having the shame to admit I've never painted a Roman I was asked to paint this as a commission and was well pleased with the amount of detail and level of sculpting in this piece.

Painted using scale 75 metallics, old silver, classic gold, oils and AK interactive steel and gold metallic paste for highlights. Also used Mr. Models metal colour aluminium on edges of steel plating.
The AK interactive stuff is a paste which comes in a tube and does flake a fair bit when dry brushing so it goes everywhere on the figure so I would do the metals before any material ensuring you've cleaned all the wee flakes off.

I will pinwash black oil paint between the segmenta plates and around the ornation to create more depth.

As usual was aiming for seasoned soldier with well worn armour and grizzled features.

These are quick pictures taken with my iPhone which really overemphasis the brown tones of the oils giving more of a bronzed appearance ( tucked that away in my bronze mix folder), but they are much more subdued in real life and I will take better pics (hopefully) later with my good camera. The last pic shows more true to life tones showing as steel.

    See what you think,

    Grant

Hi Grant. This is looking good, coincidentally I'm just putting the finishing touches to this very bust at the moment.
I've gone for a very 'campaign' look right down to a black eye.
Watch how you go with the face it's well worthwhile constantly checking how much of your facial shading / highlighting the cheek pieces cover.
    Look forward to seeing progress.
    Cheers

    Really liking your metals Grant.
Hope to achieve something equally nice on my current WIP, metals are up next.
By the way, the Scale75 metals....did you brush paint them, or airbrush?
Am planning on using these paints as well.

    Cheers,
    Adrian

The metal work is amazing, as Adrian asked are you using an airbrush for this? Cant wait to see how you tackle the face ;)
What colour tunic are you going to paint? For a more run of the mill soldier you could paint the tunic an off white/linen colour....would make a change from the "all romans wore red tunics under their armour." :)

    Slainte.

    Hi Adrian,

Your Roman signifier is coming along great.

They are brush painted. The scale 75 paints are quite creamy and I found It wasn't levelling so I watered them down more than I wanted to. However, I realised that applying in four thin layers with slightly different mixes not only smoothed it a bit but gave some different tones so it broke up the larger areas too.

Thanks Del, I painted the cheeks and jowls just for some experimentation with new colours but he looks a mean guy and would look even better with a shiner I think.

    Davie- Cheers mate.

    Joe - Many thanks

    Wayne- Thanks fella

Oda - - Very kind of you

Pavol - Thank you very much my friend

Andy - Good suggestion regarding the reds mate. I was thinking of doing the sleeves red and portray a scarf with a natural linen colour.

  17. Very nice Grant. The black and white effect on the face is actually a rather nice effect...if you consider leaving it that way...would be a unique artistic Twist

I haven't seen R&B in shops for years , well not the silver one .
Millers in Glasgow has a similar paste but it is about nine quid a tube

Hi Grant, it looks great - it's a quite new way how to paint metal surface for me. I really like it.
