Thanks to all you guys that commented. The wood couldn't be simpler to paint.Underpaint wooden areas with Humbrol 93 or 94 ( both sand colours) and once dry brush on Burnt Umber oil paint, unthinned. Then start taking the oil paint off with a fairly large brush and the wood grain will begin to appear. If you slightly thin the oil paint you can make more grain patterns and when it's totally dry you can add more streaks of burnt umber and even black. The highlights i.e. the worn bits of the stock is easily done by rubbing off where you reckon it would be worn by using a smaller brush and take off more of the burnt umber. You can muck about as long as you like trying for different results ,which ever takes your fancy.

Had this in my paws a week or so ago.
Looks even better up close. The work on the skin is stunning, Brian's captured that 'bluish / violet' tone that flesh seems to take at twilight in the cold and snow.

I saw this on Facebook Brian (that's how 'with it' I am) and this caught my eye. When the bust was released I thought it was great, but you've really pushed it on. Fantastic job!
