Do you have a reference you're working towards? Like most uniform colours there was a fair bit of variation and if you have a specific target in mind there are good and bad choices to work with.

In general for darkish blues I like to recommend starting with any version of French Ultramarine because it will help ensure matt drying. Add a little Burnt Umber* to dull it down, then mix in as much white as needed. This is a good basic mix for blue uniforms and can be tweaked as needed in any direction you want - more greenish, more violet, more vivid, each only requires a touch of one additional colour.

*Including some umber also helps with a matt finish and should aid drying if you're not using any kind of heating to speed this up.

    Steve,
"The RAF mix I used was from a canadian friend Brian Wildfong and I added to his base mix to suit my taste. Again all oils are Windsor Newton.
The blue mix was Lamp black plus titanium white mixed to give a warm grey then some French Ultramarine blue added to taste. I also added some ultramarine violet to give it a hint of violet as per the osprey book illustrations.
Lamp black and a little Sepia added for the shadows and some and French ultramarine blue added for the lights and a hint of white if needed. I tried to keep the overall blue as a dark blue and yet still get the shadows and highlights without going to a lighter blue overall. This was hard to do."

The figure is in my "V Bench"
    Hope that this helps.
Cheers and hope to see your figure soon.
