I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that mouth is wrong(n).

I think that the mouth is a very clever move by Pegaso. It gives a nice foil to the 'prettier' faces.
Not all heroes are sculpted Adonises.
My all time favourite Rugby player from either code was the less than pretty Vince Karalius.
First saw him play as a 10 year old when I was visiting family over the border.
I see a bit of 'Vinty' in this piece.

Ugly face is fine and much more interesting, less Orlando's is good...

but no one said basic anatomy is so last year that its not needed anymore, Del :)

I know but sometimes we can get a bit too precious about things, Pretty sure the eyes are too far apart but many of us are more interested in the 'look' rather than the absolute anatomical accuracy, particularly in a bust where it's all about creating a sense of atmosphere with a face.
I don't think that such an ugly face is inconceivable, maybe it is but I for one don't think it matter too much and am happy to go with what the sculptor was trying to achieve.
I could give a real sense of brutality with this that I couldn't with some of Youngs Crusaders. It all depends what a painter is trying to achieve but I can understand why it might 'grate' with sculptors.

I approach by looking at overall character, then go for details. Hey, cool bust ...but something isnt right... the eye catches on something

wow, looking nice, great helmet, nice eyes, stubble- excellent ...Bam!! LIPS! They just stick out for me because they dont naturally fit into that face where the rest is perfect. And the reason they dont - they are too wide, flat, no curve to them and absolutely no definition to any muscles around mouth, as well as volumes of the upper lip.
Lips, whether by design or not - is the central feature of this bust and in this scale there is ample opportunity to get that definition and steer away from glamour model pout.

Anatomical accuracy is what makes that look where your brain just "buys" the piece - hook, line and sinker.
Life miniatures is the exemplar where there is hardly a pimple that looks out of place. Thats why those pieces come alive with a lick of paint

When I was a kid (the first time round) my dad brought home one of the old 8mm movie classics from the 1934 film The Crusades. It was filmed looking down on a Crusader as he climbed the scaling ladder, and the way his face changed as he saw boiling oil coming down on him was frightening. I think it was Butch from the Laurel and Hardy movies.
Now that was a brilliant uggo face(y).

Again for me it's just about a 'look'. I have zero anatomical knowledge and certainly know nothing about muscle structure around the mouth, I'm guessing the sculptor forced the mouth shape to create the brutish look.
I simply expressed an opinion that I liked the bust, others don't, fine ...... you pays your money and you takes you choice.
    Cheers

I am not sure what your point is, Steve or which part of what I said it refers to.

I always feel his lips look out of proportion to his face so was referring to him in context to the bust

I can't say say no more.I'll probably get my ass kicked on this one;but I'm calling this one as I see it .......no ass kissing, just flat out truth.....It often amazes me that YOUNG'S work gets often crucified when it is more than often very well done.

Indeed, and proportions was the only thing I referred to :)

Your picture beautifully shows all the other elements of lip anatomy that could have made this bust into something I would consider an example of sculpting I would aspire to.

You can't compare Mick Jaggers lips to that Crusader......no comparison.....................What would you say if this was "Brutal Critique"

Exactly the same, sorry I don't feel the need to justify what I like or don't like regardless of which forum it was in. I'll quite possibly buy it depending on how insane Pegaso price it, if I do it'll be posted in WIP and you and everyone else can critique it as you see fit

Not sure I'm supposed to quote my own post but I just wanted to say that I found the film clip over on YouTube under the title "Siege of Acre 1191".
