This has been a project I've had mapped out in my head for some time now,i've always been interested in the Market Garden operation, especially the british phase of the operation and the battle at Arnhem by the 1st airborne division and the heroic 9 day struggle against superior german forces.
My plan was to incorporate 3 busts depicting 3 stages of the operation -the first stage starting with the drop into Holland - followed by the 2nd stage with the fighting in and around Arnhem and finally the 3rd stage which will depict the stand after succumbing to the germans and the withdrawel.

To achieve this,i have opted for 3 busts from Young Miniatures,2 of which will be the same bust but with added extras and some conversion work.

the two busts I have opted for are below

however I wont be using the face on the bust pictured right, for me it has a stupid look about it and its a shame really because the rest of the bust is beautifully done.

As you will see from the photo below,i have added a different young miniatures head and added the helmet slung onto the backpack, this head I felt was more appropriate for what I was looking for.

To the above bust I've added part of the sten gun which was purchased from friendship models who deal in 1/9th ww2 weapons, the sling was done with pewter sheet and magic/sculp,i will add the beret badge during the painting stage.

This bust will depict the drop into Holland on the 17th September 1944,this is the perfect bust for me because it was just what I was after to accomplish this project, the detail is beautifully done,i have left off the sten which is in 2 parts and would be strapped to the chest during the jump to ease the painting of the Denison smock.

the final bust i'm just wainting on from historex, its the same as the first bust but will depict the paratrooper at the end of the struggle prior to withdrawel from Arnhem.

there will be a few other extras and perhaps a backdrop for the final overall piece.

Great idea and I like the way you are going to portray the events through three different busts, really looking forward to following this one.

I am pretty sure I have a mould for 1/9 Para cap badge somewhere in the workshop, If I can find it and if you need a couple of resin castings I can send them to you for use on the bust.

    Cheers

Hi Paul, thank you for your coments and I hope you have an enjoyable trip to Arnhem.

The pegaso para I painted a few years ago,it's slightly smaller than these two,but a nice bust.
