Have any of you guys painted undercoat directly onto resin?
Because I'll be finishing in oil I'd prefer to avoid any layers I can, particularly primer.
I'm about to work on a small highly detailed fantasy figure with a lot of intricate detail that I
I don't want to obscure.

Derek,
I always undercoat.......... You can undercoat with Vallejo surface primer and apply it by brush and that way you can get a thin undercoat. If to thin repeat. Comes in white or grey.
This is just my preferred choice as I don't like to take chances. I usually undercoat flesh with Humbrol 63. Thin double coat

I remember Verlinden the Great skipped even the undercoat and painted with oils directly on the resin. At least for faces and sand-coloured resin.
On delicate pieces I like to use an undercoat of thinned matt grey Humbrul, applied by brush. It doesn't fully cover, but gives enough bite for the next layers.

I never had any problems painting acrylics without an undercoat directly onto resin. Tested Vallejo primer nevertheless applied by brush to identify areas where some more smoothing out was necessary and it works fine.

Hi Del,
For me, unlike metal, resin will take oil direct so long as the surface is scrupulously clean and free of any trace of release agents. However, and I think that you will know what I mean when I say that, on resin that is very smooth to the point of a polished finish with no key ability I would give a thin brush over with acrylic first.

Hi Del.....as said....oils do need a 'keying/toothed' ground....to avoid obscuring detail....use a base coat of matt sealer to provide the 'grip' for the oils.....oils dry by penetration as well as oxidisation.
Think of it this way....a plant needs to put down roots in order to remain in place....same with oils.

On resin figures I painted directly on the primer. Never had any problem.
As Ivo Preda said: with a undercoating, you are just coloring the primer.

Thanks guys. I've decided to go with primer only and skip the undercoat.
Going to use different coloured primers for different areas, so quite a bit of masking involved.
That way I can go directly with the oils. I tend to work wet on dry so first oil coat, after thoroughly drying, will also serve as the undercoat.

Back to basics. Having spent the morning farting about with various primers in various combinations, on resin and metal I'm right back to where I started years ago.

A quick go over with good old Halfords grey primer, then it's one easy step to a nice blue rinse .

why the feck did you even go there , you know the score!!! oils need something to bit into or you will get blinded with the sheen , but you know that too

Del with blue rinse, that is a mental image that will entertain me for years to come
