I am working on the Life Miniature MG 42 and Tripod carrier busts. I know the Kharkov jackets are more of a greenish color than the normal field gray. I am using Vallejos but can't figure out what to use as my starting shade.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers,

    Scott

These Parkas of the first batch with a pull-over design that could not be opened and closed by a row of buttons at the front were not produced to a fixed standard and could be anything from green shade to dark grey or brown. They are rare items and originals are next to non-existent. The second picture below should show a Parka of the first batch modified into the design of the second batch. It was stated as being an original and sold for an insane price at an auction.

Several references have said that the first batch of parkas as worn at Kharkov were of a shade called “Mouse Grey”, which was more of a grey shade than greenish-grey. I can remember someone on this site sharing a Vallejo mix for Mouse Grey about 2012 (think it was in a thread about the Kirin 1/16 Kharkov figures, if that helps) & I wrote it down at the time, but I’m not able to locate it now. Try going back through the archives looking for Kirin 1/16 Kharkov panzergrenadiers, Scott & it’s more than likely still there.

    HTH,
    Chris.

Or even try Googling “Vallejo mix for Mouse Grey parkas”.

Thanks for all of the help. I was playing with possible mixes last night. I will give it a whirl. What is the worst that can happen easy off bath?

Scott, I got this Vallejo mix from Calvin Tan a number of years ago. He used a base of Park Green (70.969) and German Camo Black Brown (70.822). Added the Camo Black Brown to the base for shading and Sunny skintone (70.845) to the base for highlights.

I looked in Modelling Fallschirmjager Figures (Forns and Romero) from Osprey. Though on the lighter side, there is a mix for a jump smock that might be good base to work from (Vallejos)

Base: Olive Green (888) plus Grey Green (866) and Sunny Skintone (845)
Shading by adding Black (950) and Highlighting by adding Sunny Skintone

    Paul,

I will look into this one as well. I have all of these colors in my stash of paint.
