    Hey All

Finally finished this piece off tonight. It's a 54mm Metal Modeles piece, painted entirely with Vallejo acrylics with some Citadel washes and Sargent acrylic metallics. The base is a homecut chunk of Red Oak, clear coated, unstained. The groundwork is Apoxie Clay built up around the stock model base and includes small natural stones all painted up in various earthtones and sepia, mud and green washes. Ground cover is a mix of model railway flocking grass, small bushes and bits of natural roots.

I've placed this guy as an officer of Cuirassiers at the Battle of Dresden, during theCampaign in Germany, August, 1813. During the secong day of the battle, our man, as part of Doumerc's 3rd Heavy Cavalry Division, became involved in the action near Cotta against the Austrian 3rd Light Division under Mieszko. The Austrians formed up squares and repulsed the French cavalry repeatedly until a Horse Battery was brought up. Once the squares were softened up with a couple of shots of cannister, the Cuirassiers and Dragoons of 3rd Div. rode down the squares and the fleeing infantry, capturing Mieszko in the process.

Thanx for looking in and for those who followed the WIP of this project, thanx for the encouragement and advise along the way.
Feel free to give any thoughts you might have about this guy. I quite enjoyed the painting of the piece.

    Cheers

Thanx Colin... I feel it went pretty well. A pretty stress-free paint, for once. The sculpt makes it easy to work on and it is a fairly simple (yet elegant) uniform. The only issue, as always, was installing the reins... If you were listening you might have heard me swearing all the way over there in Oakville.

I'd recommend this kit for sure... give it a shot my brother

looks really nice Colin . I am amazed how quickly you finished him , he would take me about 2 months ! These mounted figures are really worth the effort and are far more impressive than foot figures.

    Looks great Colin.

I remember when you first started posting on here, and you have come on in leaps & bounds since. Time was your groundwork was a bit hit & miss, but you seem to have that nailed now as well.

All you need to finish this one off is a nice plaque for the plinth (the icing on the cake).

    Good finish Colin,
Very cleanly painted, you have come on in leaps and bounds from when you had the knee chopped and you can neither leap nor bound (how cruel is that. Sorry Mate).
It has been a real joy to follow this from a bare casting to this beauty. Great work Colin I like it a lot.

Thanx everyone for the kind words and encouragement.
As I have said before, since join PF and having access to the opinions and expertise the members here, I feel that my work has improved more than in the years of painting before I found this site. Between the examples of great work, the honest critiques, encouragement and the painters from my area that I would have otherwise never met, this site has been indispensable.

Timing wise, this was a shade over two weeks, all told about 25 hours give or take. If it wasn't for being off on sick leave, that 25 hours would have been spread over a month or more.

I found the groundwork is just like painting... practice practice practice. I try to use the groundwork to place the figure in the context of a region or battlefield... that calls for some forethought so that my bases no longer look like an unkept golfcourse. I do have a long way to go though. I want to start trting some multiple level type basing and maybe using some more scenic accessories... bits off wall/fence, entrenchments, like that.

Thanx again guys. Time to figure out what's next

As I expected from you, this display ended SUPER! You did a wonderful job with this guy! Very nice balanced and integrated and you made me open the history book... war of the six coalition, Dresden, Leipzig, etc....
Can't wait to have a close look at Ajax!
    Cheers, my friend!

The sculpt made this an enjoyable paintjob. MM make a nice fig even if they are a little static in their poses.
Digging into the background of the fig is half the fun... researching the uniform, going into the history of the subject and using that to give the sculpt some context. I feel more invested doing all the background than just using the kit's guide and not understanding the subject. When I did the Roman/Germanic scene, I never really researched it and didn't really connect to the project.

This guy will be at Ajax next month :)

Hello Colin, This piece turned out great, as did your groundwork. I agree with Steve, all you need is a nameplate to compliment it. I also agree with you, about doing research before any project. You were the one who got me interested in Napoleon type figures, when you were trying to find information on Russian Sappers for your Borodino Dio. I learned alot, and became very interested in these type of figures, there battles, and mainly, the many and varied uniforms. I thank you for that. Best of luck with your next project. Will keep an eye out for it. Regards, SG:)(y)(y)

Glad I could share my enthusiasm for this period in history. Great uniforms, personalities and stories. Be happy to help on the subject if ever you need it.

The Print shop I used to use for plaques closed down so I must come up with another way to make labels. There's more than one unidentified piece on the shelf right now.

    Cheers

Wow Colin, don't know where to start from so i am going to keep it simple, what a great job have you done on this mounted figure.
the metal works impecable as usual, you always give a nice effect on those metal parts.
the surtout looks great, i think the color blue is dead on and you usual style of smooth contrast between lights and shadows gives the rest of the figure a great overall look, there are not parts of the figure the takes the eyes away from the whole figure cause you gave it a great balance on the contrasting colors.
the groundworks.....what can i say?, i am one of your admirers at this, to me you make a very realistic look at the scenery.
the base is a very nice addition and great display.
best regards and keep us happy with the next project!

Wow Daniel... you've made me blush. These observations mean a great deal as I really like your work as well. I can thank you for alot of the "recipes" I use... We've done alot of exchanging and I've put your recipes to good use on most of my figures.

Hope I don't let you down on the next one :cautious:
