Another couple of sessions since the last update has allowed me to crack on with the first side of the flag,to tie in with the weathered figure I decided to do exactly the same with the flag.
I don't ever use chalks, powders or pastels on my stuff, but I wanted t replicate a bit of gunsmoke stains on the flag,as I said,i don't like powders of any sort, but to replicate the gunsmoke I purchased some sticks of charcoal, which I crushed into a fine powder and applied it with a brush to a couple of areas.
all other weathering to the flag was done with oils and the citadel blood gore.
As for the flag cords,i decided to go with something different to the norm,i had seen images of Russian Napoleonic flags with coloured cords before so I went with this option on this piece,a little bit of artistic licence and it gives it something different,i weathered the tattered edges of the flag with some earthy oils like raw sienna with white.
The only problem now is doing the whole thig again on the other side.

    Wonderful work, Brian.
1 question:why did you decide to paint and weather one side only?
Would it not have been easier to paint both sides (let one side dry before painting the other side), then weather both sides at the same time? Would make it much easier to remain constamt with the weathering.

Doing one side at a time is much easier for me and my methods,I use the same mixes for each element,so there won't be any inconsistency, there's no rules when figure painting,it's what is easier for me,I've painted many flags over the years and this way suits me and reduces the number of times I have to handle the piece

Thanks for the answer. I can see how reducing the number of tines you handle a piece is an advantage, particularly if you colour mixes are constant
