Base coats (simple humbrol colour ? ) Before applying oils

    Dear All,

Could the base coats be a simple colour i.e. a regular blue Humbrol (matt 25), a regular yellow Humbrol (matt 24) , a regular red Humbrol ( matt 60) ?
Or the base coat should already be the nearest colour of the base coat of the oil ? This implies to buy a lot of more tins of Humbrol.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Jim,
I try to get the base coat (Humbrol enamel) similar to the required oil colour. That is, dark green, mid green or light green. Dark, mid or light red,. No need to buy a whole range of colours. You can mix the basics with a limited range of colours. Eg, making greens from blue and yellow; darken reds with green etc.
    Hope this helps.

The base coat has not to be so close as the final oil coat but just the same colour, right ?

That's correct Jimbow. For me it is simply to provide the background colour. For the darker colours you can add the main highlights with enamel before applying the oils.

Other more experienced painters than me may have other techniques.

I picked up this oils over enamels method in late 1990s and it still works for me. My favorites are Humbrol, also the now-discontinued Testors and Model Master.

My base coat is oil, oil over oil. Never need or use enamel or acrylic as base coat for oil.
