Some of you will know AIMS Models as producers of model aircraft parts and accessories. However, it was recently announced in this forum that they have now moved into figures and two 75mm subjects have just been released. One is of an RAF pilot in the early 1950s, the other is of a Second Lieutenant of the Black Watch in home service dress at the start of WW1. This latter is the subject of this quick review.

The figure is portrayed in service jacket, kilt and sporran, with belled hose and Glengarry. The pose is casual, the left hand holding a cigarette and the right, a pair of gloves. The figure is unarmed, without pistol or sword. Here is a photo of Lieutenant Viscount Francis Drumlanrig of the first battalion of the Black Watch, which I think might be the inspiration for the model:



Sculpture is by Greg Girault and the work is well up to his usual high standards. The figure is cast in light grey resin and moulding is sharp and well defined throughout, especially the pleating of the kilt which has a realistic hang and weight to it. The face is of a young man and features are well defined and characterful. here are some pics.



As you can see, the figure comes in 6 pieces: head, two arms, two lower legs and body/upper legs. No issues are apparent, apart from the large moulding plug attached to the bottom of the kilt, which will require some sawing to remove. This also means that there are no locating holes for attaching the lower legs or any indication of where the correct position might be, so a bit of fiddling around will be necessary to find the correct position. The legs will require drilling and pinning for security. A photo of the assembled figure is available from John at AIMS, and perhaps this could be provided with the kit of posted on the AIMS website. The underside of the kilt is solid resin and I will want to carve some of the material away, having fixed the position of the legs first, to provide a semblance of overhang for the kilt.

Notwithstanding the latter comment, this is an excellent figure, well worth adding to your collection if you like Scottish regiments and/or WW1 figures. Thanks Nap. The resin is in fact regulation light grey, the light of a Scottish winter's day seems to have given it a bluish tinge. Must be the cold.

There is a tiny piece of excess resin between the thumb and forefinger which I mistook for a ciggie! Should have gone to Specsavers. Mind you, it would probably do duty as a woodbine if you so chose...
