BTW, I thought the Tartan was pretty easy to paint. I had much more difficult time with the the small and detailed white trim on the tunic.


Some suggestions for improving my ground work would be helpful, too.
I was going to mention that I think my ground work is not very good. I seem to notice this only after I have mounted the figure and taken the pics. Seems to me to be very sparce and lacking detail. Could use some more ground clutter may be? Some ideas for improving or different materials. BTW, I very much like the ground work that Pepe Gallardo has done!

Great job, as usual. How did you get that muted effect on his kilt? I've already painted over the kilt on my Scotsman for the 2nd time :angry: so attempt #3 will come as soon as I set up the paints after Easter break.

Mike - Well, I have found that oils are too vibrant and bright for patterns.
So, I applied two filter coats of Raw Umber when the tartan was completely dry.
Filter = Very Light Wash :lol: This seems to tone down the color and tie the patterns together. Not sure why but it seems to work. I also added MIG European mud + Dust + Turpenoid to the botton 1/4 of the kilt. After this was dry, I gently removed the excess.

I also added the raw umber filter to the diced hose (which REALLY needed to be toned down)
