After my intial post describing this beautiful bust I finaly got round last weekend to put some paint onto it.
I nearly always paint from top to bottom headgear, plumes etc before moving down to the face and collar etc, this piece was no exception, begining with the fur bonnet and the diced headband, before moving on with the hair and flesh.
for the bonnet and diced band I didn't use any oils for this, both were painted using acrylics and lightened with acrylics,i like to use a strong contrast on the bonnet and then reduce it with games workshop washes.
Care had to be taken with the diced band and some planning, because if they aren't evenly spaced it will look odd by the time you get to the rear, you could end up with an irregular spacing,i lightly penciled these in and when I was happy I began the painting.
All the flesh was done with oils over acrylic as was the collar, which still has a small bit left to do.
The Gordon tartan is in the very early acrylic stages, with just 3 colours added so far, there is still black and yellow to add yet and these like the bonnet will have a strong contrast and will finally be toned down with a dark green oil wash.
I have a few painting articles by bill horan on painting tartans and I have developed my own technique using some of bill's articles,i have sketched the pattern out using pencils on a piece of paper before the painting,i will add photos as I go with the tartan painting.
Acrylic basecoat has been added to the epaulette, but not completed at this stage.
At present im trying out a new camera,so in terms of the photos im still in the experimental stage,it takes me quite a while to understand a camera manual :arghh: .

You've got off to a cracking start, good luck with the tartan. I don't know if it'll change how you paint it but those are feathers on the bonnet, not fur.
    All the best,
    Scotty.

Many thanks my friend,be careful with the box art,the dicing is just red and white, but all my references say it's red, white and green
