Thx for the sharing. The SFDP pushes the prices up considerably!
Besides the obvious (fine detail), what is the material like? Is it oily and rubbery?

Ordered from shapeways several times. Smooth plastic is what it says, smooth (hard) plastic. It works okè.
Service is great and you can always contact the individual designer for questions.

The material is HARD, good idea to wash them and a light scrub with an old soft toothbrush

Wow, indeed!!! Curious if this material is so much more expensive....
I sometimes order small 1/72 figures and the difference in price is no more then $1,-...
It's not the maker that makes the differencecin price though, it's shapeways since they are the one printing it.
Just started a conversation with the maker about this. Hoping prices can lower a bit.

When printing with SLA or DLP tech the cost of the material itself, UV curing resin, tend to be really high. Depending on the printer, as high as 50 bucks for 500 ml of the resin. Hence the price. Shapeways has always been a bit pricey, though.

Just had contact with the maker. The normal plastic will do very well for the larger ( 1/35 and up) scales.
    Here are some painted examples

Well, I'm sure I'm going to use some in dio's !

    Hi All,

Thanks for yr replies. Quite enlightening. Looks doable except for the pricing.
I was going to suggest that the owners of Mini-natur do a survey of their customer queries and see which animals and scale were the most popular and then turn these into resin castings. It would surely bring the costs down. Right now, the costs are pricier than some top-notch metal resin kits.
    But I'll still keep lurking....

I bought 4 Cheetahs in 1/24 scale and they are perfect you can hardly see any casting lines, and they were $15 each if I went up to the smoothest fine detail plastic they are only $26 each, that is cheaper than a resin casting by say La Meridiana

I have purchased a 1/16 cheetah and impala from them in fine detail plastic. They look great. I had a small hole to fix on the inside of one of the hind legs of the cheetah.
I hope to purchase more of them in the future.

Does anyone know where I could find a Shetland pony in 1:16?

Incredibly detail as sculpting animals seems to be very difficult to 'get right' (especially animals like bears and dogs which often have anthropomorphic posture and features respectively)

    This range looks superb however.

Thanks for starting this topic and informing me about this forum. It’s nice meeting new hobbyists! I’m Stijn, the owner of miniNature and sculptor of the animals. It’s a hobby project, totally different than my day job, but it’s a great combination of my love for 3D modeling and animals. Great to see my work is appreciated!
@Scotty, sorry, I don't have Shetland Ponies yet.

Like it’s said above, it’s too bad Shapeways raised their prices. It’s a consideration between the fine detail plastic and the cheaper versatile plastic. The fine detail is described above, but the cheaper versatile could also be useful for some projects. This is a nylon based material, with a bit of a rough grainy surface, but still capturing a high detail. In my opinion this works good with the furry animals, because of the fur a rough surface fits.
The hole Balder was mentioning is found in nearly all larger scaled models of mine. To decrease printing costs by Shapeways, I make the models hollow, so the 3D printers need less material to print the models. I always try to hide the holes under the soles, but when they are too small, I choose a spot between the legs as the best hidden place.

The page HansDig showed, is Signatustudio by the great artist Miguel, I know from another forum. With his painting skill he painted several of my figurines. Here you can see some of his work on the cheaper plastic, in G scale. (Only the dik-diks in the last picture, still in the base primer, are in the more expansive plastic and the bigger dik-diks in 1/9 scale.)

Be also sure to check his work with his own classical sculpts. Signatustudio has among others some great Pleistocene sculpts!

Hope to have a great time here on this forum!

Hi Stijn, welcome aboard. As I already said in out "Shapeways-chatsession" this is a great (and mostly fun) forum and a good place to show your products and new releases !! These are great miniatures which will be a welcome addition to a lot of diorama's and vignettes since they come in many scales !
The Rhinos will be a great addition to my ( still waiting on the stash for the right moment ) "The Scramble"
( is 54 mm the same as 1/32....?)

    Hi Stijn,

Good to see yr presence here. Most of us are fellow modellers and can appreciate great sculpting etc. 3D printing is a great new approach but it may be worth your while to explore making some of your great sculpts available as resin castings for sale. Just my suggestion. Rgds Victor
