Here is my latest one for this spring, a dashing Captain in the Guides de Bonaparte, a very good 75mm metal figure from Pegaso and sculpted by Richard Galiceck, painted in oils as usual. Feel free to comment and criticize.

Thanks for looking! Now I am of to weeks of whale watching in the Strait of Gibraltar. May I kindly ask anyone brexiting the EU to leave the Rock in its place, please? We sometimes use it as a landmark while floating there, thanks.

Lovely piece of work, Pierre....I like Richard Galicek's sculpts of Napoleonics (as in the Alexandros Garde Imperiale figures)...they seem to have that essential "je ne se quois" about them.

Enjoy your trip,.... I think we'll leave Gib where it is, just to annoy the Spanish  Bon voyage !

Pierre, Nice job on the Guides!(y) I'm a big fan of Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign. Love the way you pulled off the reds and greens. The groundwork really adds to the figure as well! Thanks for sharing your work! I appreciate it greatly!!!

Thanks for leaving the Djebel al Tarik in its proper place, I really appreciate that. It nicely balances the Djebel Musa on the other side of the Strait and where would you put it anyway? :LOL:

And on a more serious note: thank you for your nice comments, gentlemen!

    Cheers,

Very nice Pierre. This is a great figure from Pegaso. Lovely work on the colours, particularly the green. Is it a mix or a straight colour from the tube? I sometimes find when using a mix for green it can dry with a sheen.

    Hello Neal,

The base is Cinnabar Green Deep W&N, darkened with a touch of Indigo also W&N, highlights in the fresh with Naples Yellow Light in the basic mix. Once dry, shadows were added with a very diluted wash of Ivory Black W&N and Sepia from Old Holland.
    Thanks for looking,

    Pierre, beautiful work!
May I ask about your process for painting the gold aiguillette?

Thanks Benny, I’ll be back in a few weeks with the recipe. For the moment I am at sea off the Tarifa coast counting pilot whales.

Sorry to have kept you waiting, I'm back on terra firma for a while. My recipe for painting gold braid and aiguillettes is very simple: on a matt undercoat I paint a thin coat of Burnt Umber and then wet on wet W&N Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna mixed with gold printers ink. When dry details are painted with W&N Gold Ochre 285 and Naples Yellow Deep 425, going of course from dark to light. I'm sure you'll find this method much better described by some of the leading painters, rather than in my clumsy wording! Have fun,

    Hey Pierre,

I hope you had a successful whale spotting session.
I appreciate the explanation on the gold braids. I am working (=procrastinating) on my Barron Larrey figure. I tried to use Rembrandt's gold on his Garde Imperiale aiguillettes, but they turned out too "metalic" and shiny when compared to period portraits of him. When I saw your Guide to Bonaparte, it had the exact look I was aiming to. I learned a lot and will try to implement it soon.

    Thank you very much!

    Thank you Benny,

Sometimes on busts I mix W&N Gold in the first coat to give the aiguillettes or braid a nice sparkle and also a "tooth" to paint the details. In my preferred 75mm scale a small amount of printers ink seem to work well.
    Enjoy your painting!

    Pierre

PS Whale spotting and counting went very well, despite strong levante gales in the Strait of Gibraltar. In a few months when the tuna migration starts, I am of again to the orcas off the Moroccan coast.

Very nicely done indeed, you have got the colour tones for the reds and greens spot on .
