Just starting on this one, planned as a dio with the chariot chasing a Roman through a ford. There will be a good sized tree on the small hill near the scout. Let’s hope I can do it justice!

I believe if you will do it historically right you should have the Roman face the Boudica

I agree with Marc, but more for artistic reasons (I'm sure if a chariot steamed up to me with a dirty great screaming lady on board I'd hesitate a bit)

The layout of the diorama at the moment has everything leading the viewers eye off to the right and away from the action. Turning the Roman around engages the viewer better since it stops the eye sliding off the edge of the base and encourages their empathy . . . will the chariot simply run over the Roman . . . who is this brave man charging towards danger etc. Once you've stopped the eye sliding away you can lead it around the scene with colours and extra bits and bobs making the whole thing more compelling.

A most ambitious project. Haven't started my kit either, so I will be following with interest. And I agree with Marc. The Roman should be facing her.

Great concept and one hell of a project to undertake but it will be a crackin display when finished, I am on the Roman running towards the danger side.

Matt, with all due respect for the opinions of others, I reckon your original idea with the Roman being chased through a ford -- simply rocks -- and the diorama will tell the story well.
I'm really interested in your chariot build as this is one of those that I've been hopping from foot to foot trying to decide whether to order one up, or not. This looks like a fairly complicated project, so I find myself unusually hesitant to light the blue touch paper. Did you have any major problems putting it together?

Lots of love for the Romans here, but I'm happy with him on the run. Boudica was scourged, her daughters raped, and I for one, frankly want her to trample the Roman. The high side of the dio on the back will feature her speech before the her final battle. I'm giving her a moment of triumph before the bitter end.

As far as assembly, it has gone together smoothly and the castings are top notch. A few seams to clean up, but mostly hidden behind and underneath things where they aren't too obvious. The only area that seems a bit off is where the yoke joins the horses, but some simple trimming will fix it. I had to use very little filler, just a touch on the horses.

My only thought about changing the kit is potentially lengthening her skirt. It would make battle difficult, but I can't find any info on Celtic women wearing mini-dresses.

I'm with you Matt the idea of a Roman charging head on into a chariot, well. . . It's not going to end well for him. Watching this with interest as I have this one on the to do list myself.

Well Matt, according to Pegaso, not only did Celtic women wear mini-dresses, they also got their Burberry designer cloaks at the local branch of Marks & Spencer....
Apologies in advance for the thread hijack, but thought you might like a look at my take on Boadica as she and her henchmen eye up the Romans on the eve of the Battle of Watling Street. (If I can find the rest of the photos, I'll open a new thread and post the full set of them).


The more I look at your excellent diorama idea, the more tempted I am to do my own version. According to their website, El Greco still have 7 of those Chariot kits in stock, so I'll sleep on it and decide whether to enter the order, or not, on Monday.
I think I recognize the running Roman figure, but if you don't mind me asking, who mfr's the Scout on the small rise to the right of your Chariot?

I like the idea of the Roman being pursued by the chariot, works really well. To add more animation and drama to the scene you could have either the Roman just exiting the ford or the front legs of the horses just entering the ford. This will allow you to create some dynamic water effects of water being thrown forward to show movement.

That's a beauty of a dio! Love the fashion sense too . Honestly, I don't think you would have trouble reselling the kit if you eventually decided not to build it, so better to grab it while it's available, imo. The 'Celt Scout' is from Darkstar Miniatures. It's oop, but they kindly told me they would cast another for me before I found one here on PF.

Absolutely fantastic idea. That was my initial plan, though when I set it up I felt like the chariot was too close to the Roman. I think what I need to do is cut back the hill and widen the stream to make it happen. I've been down with a nasty cold and not working on this, but the benefit is it has kept me from getting in so far that I don't want to change things. Thanks !

The order has gone in mate, and I've no intention of reselling the kit. Thanks for the info on the Celt Scout. I think that I mighty just go for a couple of different "Barbarian" figures though.
Assuming I can get my hands on the other figures I want to include opposing Boadicea, and she doesn't necessarily have to be the Icini Queen either........I'm certainly looking at a long term project here.
It'll probably be the end of this year, or even a full 12 months, before I finish the scene I'm planning, but I think it'll definitely be worth the effort.
