Hi everyone. I have been trying to search the web and did a search of this forum regarding painting an elephant. I'm not having much luck. Does anyone have any thoughts on colours or mixtures and generally any hints on how best to paint an elephant? I just got the RP War Elephant and would like to do it properly. I've printed out a few pictures of various elephants, eyes, etc but am still fuzzy on the proper colours to use. I think a mousy grey but again, I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated and any links would be especially welcome. Thanks in advance.

From my research though I have found some conflicting information. I just got the Osprey book on War Elephants and it says there were 2 types of elephants used, either Indian or African and the Forrest Elephant is grouped in with African. From other sources I am led to believe the elephants used were Syrian (a type of Asiatic elephant) or North African Elephants, both of which are extinct. The North African elephant is about the same size as the African Forrest Elephant which are smaller than the African Bush Elephant of more southern areas. The Asian Elephants of which Indian Elephants are a type also have a different shaped head. I think I'll go with a mousy grey colour as I believe the browner coloured elephants are more the bush type. I'm interested inn seeing the ref material from RP to help cement the colour I will do. I dont know if any of the above is of any help to anyone, but that is what I have found so far.
