When I upload a file in a thread it comes up as an attachment below the thread - for example 12th post done in this thread http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/black-watch-cap-insignia-crimean-war.78333/

Can anyone advise how I go about posting an image so that it comes up in a decent size within the post itself, rather than as an attachment?

Chris - Your question should really go to one of the moderators. But, I was curious about embedding an image in the text myself, so thought I'd try it.

I tried to put an image in the body of this text unsuccessfully. I copied the URL for an image taken from a web search. I used the tree icon to load the URL and insert it in the text. And you see the result above.

Next I tried copying an image for a film I like and dropping it directly into the text box without using the tree icon. And it worked as you can see. I think the image is embedded as a hyperlink linked to the URL below. The hyperlink process might work for an image on your computer.

But...why would you want to do this vs. using the upload a file process? Maybe sometimes embedding a hyperlink might be the best way to explain something... ?

Going back to your question about the size of the image. If you used Photoshop or some other image software, you could adjust the size of your image as well as control shading, colors, and lots of other things. Then load the image as an attachment and the viewer will see the larger, higher quality image. The viewer can also choose between a smaller version of the image as a thumbnail or the larger image.

I recommend using a photo hosting site, such as Photobucket, and avoid the whole attachment business completely.

If you use a hosting site, you upload your photos there, edit them if you like, and then the site will generate a URL, a string of text that you can then paste into a post in another website, like this forum. The website reads the URL, goes out to the hosting site, and retrieves the image. No messing with resizing photos, or worrying about the specific restrictions that any given forum may have the file size of attachments. Personally, I find this easier to deal with, than to load my photos in every forum I belong to (about 7 or 8), each with different requirements. I have 1 version of each file, and I just load it to Photobucket, then use the links everywhere.

And with the link from the host, you can paste it into your post, wherever you like. If you have a couple of photos from an SBS, for example, you can write your paragraph, describe each step, and then embed the link where appropriate to the text.

Also, since you're not adding another file to the website, you're not taking up the additional file space that the website has. That's why webmasters implement such restrictions in the first place--their sites reside on a server somewhere (even in the cloud) and there is finite storage space. Every attachment creates a new file and takes up a little more space.

Photobucket lets you load images free of charge, up to a certain limit of space. I finally hit the limit after 7 years of use. I thought about starting another account with another host, like Fotki, and using up their offered free storage, but I broke down and paid for the minimum subscription at Photobucket, about $49 for around 50 gig of space.

Right, it is very tempting to go back to old discussions and not find the pictures anymore. I prefer to load them directly from my external memories

Photobucket is claiming people are using Ad. Blocker so that they are not making any money from ads.
I also switch to imgur and is better than Photobucket.

If you are a paying Photobucket customer, the change will not impact you at this time. I subscribed to the basic account, Plus50, at the end of 2015, when I reached the end of the free storage space (which was before they increased the popup ads, by the way). As this controversy broke, I wondered why I hadn't gotten the email so many others had, and I wondered why my linked images were still active. I went to the website and noticed that there is now a banner across the top of the landing page with a link to a more detailed explanation for the current paid accounts. PB will continue to provide 3rd party hosting for existing paid accounts through 2018, provided we keep our subscriptions current. That gives us some time to make arrangements for our images.

I'm looking at Fotki, myself.

Excellent thread, quite informative for newcomers

I've an account on Photobucket, and so far they never asked me to pay for it!

Some time ago, I had some pics in one of my Blogs being replaced by some Photobucket message, so as I hadn't visited it for a long time, I logged in, checked if there was something wrong, saw nothing wrong, so logged out, and returned to my Blog. Did refresh on the page and just like that all pics that weren't showing up were there again! No idea what happened! Maybe they (Photobucket) were missing me, and the simple fact I paid them a short visit was good enough lol...

Anyway, I'll have to check this Imgur storage site, see how it works and eventually create an account there. The problem is that I have thousands of pics on Photobucket, so it won't be an easy task to move them all to a new address!...
