Simple proposal for Figure News - MEMBERS THOUGHTS please

    Hi All,

Figure News is where manufacturers post news and updates of their products where they get some visibility for their new products. Ours is a niche hobby.

I think that any feedback (positive or not) can be made in Figure Talk or Review.

Hence I propose that Figure News should have a feature which allows only one posting (the initial post by presumably the manufacturer or appointed agent) and then the thread is locked.

    Hi Victor

Be would be interested in other members thoughts

Not sure if it's possible to actually lock after initial if that's not possible there's a lot of releases so possibly some might get missed .

If comments are to be made in Figure Talk then a thread would need to be started there as well

So posters when using Figure News put something into the talk part they need to be aware of this , possibly with a header

Or maybe it's possible for a news thread to but posted into talk at the same time ?

Also would it add anything to PF for members ?

    Will look into this

Im sorry I cant see the point.
Keep it as it is, We know when a kit is released members like to add uniform info etc. I can see no reason to split it , keep it under one umbrella.

I'll agree to leave it as is rather than have an extra thread for discussion.

Initially I thought it sounded like a good idea (making it easy to scan through all the new stuff), but members contributions and comments help buyers not only decide whether to buy the new item, but also often add valuable information, references or links to other relevant threads.

    Cheers

Figure News threads do occasionally degenerate into willy-waving contests, when (usually self-appointed) "experts" decide to wade in and trash a release rather than offer up positive critique. This gets some people's backs up, and unpleasantness then ensues. So I can understand why some guys might think a split of the kind that Victor suggests could be a good idea.

But thankfully these things don't happen too often so on balance I agree with the comments above - keep things as they are.

Cant see the point as it easy enough for someone to open a new thread on another part of the forum to talk about a particular new release which could inevitably lead to more problems than its worth.

    Hi all,

Good to note some response to my proposal, most to keep it as it is.

I simply feel that when manufacturers put up their new releases, they have already invested time, effort and money into the updates.

this is always accompanied by relevant photos.

Do we need third party opinions as to its quality?

We can still add our likes n dislikes into emoticon bars.

Textual comments such as 'great new release' or 'I'll be sending in my order' only serves to lengthen the thread by repeating the emoticon bars without adding further insight into the piece.
Any insight into historical accuracy always meets with the counting rivets riposte.
Any critique on anatomical or scale shortcomings always meets with the photo of giant and dwarf soldiers standing side by side.

If someone feels very strongly about a piece, then by all means open a thread elsewhere to have a meaningful discussion. Others who feel equally strongly can then join in. Leave the figure news to the manufacturers

By analogy, we are always polite for works posted in work in progress or completed works. We have a brutal critique section for those hardy souls who want real criticism on their work.

I for my part don`t want to do a double-check if anybody else has opened another thread with additional references and information about a new release.
Given someone will do this the same problems will occur anyway.
If manufacturers really fear the feedback about their new releases why not post the pictures via PM to a mod who weekly opens a thread "news of the week" with the pictures, prices and web links for orders that is not open for further comments?
In this case I would like to see a PF-knowledge base restricted to background info about different historical and hobby related topics where just the said information is offered/exchanged and comments without providing any references and facts can be reported to be deleted...

I don't see any merit in the suggestion of one shot threads and emoticons only to express an opinion. In general we're creating and painting historical miniatures or fantasy figures. For historical figures I love the addition of additional plates and info from other members.

I think it fair to point out where there are conflicting references or inaccuracies (sources and anatomical) but I think it wrong to attack suppliers, just point out where your believe they have inaccuracies and let the suppliers figre out if they want to invest more in a product or not.

    Cheers

It's more important to know the price of goods for sale.
This is the manufacturers and dealers shop window.
I find it very uncomfortable to like sonething and be told pm me for prices.
So I scroll on and never buy.

For me...if you don't declare a clear price the post should be removed...currency is irrelevant and we have a level playing field for what is after all free gratis advertising.

please keep it as is.. price of release would be a plus.. and the most important thing for me when reading this section is the ability to read comments from other planeters !

100% agree. That's one of my pet dislikes on here. So much so that I even opened a thread recently to have a rant about it.

Again if nobody can give direct opinion, how is the producer able to see if he is on the good track
My thought is never; lot of people come to see the post and leaves no comments, except perhaps some time a like
So xxx propose a new fig. he receives 331 visits, 4 likes and 5 comments does this means that more than 95% dislike the product ????

Let say I'm a producer, I show you some pictures and as I would like, obviously, to sell them, I, at least, give a link where you can see all infos about the product ( like price, size, composition, where to buy ) I still would be happy to read your opinion positive or negative . And more than happy if at least 50% of the visitors give an opinion at all .

This probably stems from the inability of the British to haggle , I for one walk on by if there is no price .
Some base manufacturers are particularly guilty of this , especially abroad , one in particular who makes splendid bases ; but dealing with him face to face is a ritual including the crushing handshake , he's been close to getting the Yosser Hughes treatment

I am not even interested in haggling over model and accessory prices mate.

My seeming inability as a Brit to haggle, only begins at 5pm when I stop doing it for a living.

If the price of a model is openly declared, I would not try to deprive a small manufacturer of a small amount of profit, that would just be bad manners.

If it's too expensive in my view, I just don't buy.

Why would I want to haggle, If I can afford it and I like it I'll buy it.

Just show me the bloody price
