I liked the look of these 1/9th busts as soon as I saw them, Sculpted by Steve Leadley for Gordon Mitchell at MMM.




I cleaned them up and filled the odd air hole in the resin, primed them, and decided to start on the RAF pilot Flt. Sgt.



Started with the face as I usually do, eyes first in acrylics and varnished over with an acrylic varnish, then the flesh in oil based Artist's oils



The hair and roll neck sweater are in Vallejo acrylics, I will have to tone down the stark ,solid look of the hair, but before them I block coloured his uniform, in Vallejo Luftwaffe Uniform WW2, which I think matches very well.

A nice start and wise choice.Steve does some great work and hes been helping me a lot.The little bases he does for sculpts set the subjects off nicely.Watching with interest Geoffrey.

Thanks Rich, I don't use the bases as I prefer to keep all mine a universal shape where possible, but I do like the idea.

I've made a quite a good bit of progress this morning, added some darker colour in the folds and under the folds, then a thinned main uniform colour which I lightened slightly and used a dark blue for the cloth backing to the stripes, crown badge, shoulder flashes and the wings. The badge and buttons were given a base coat of gold brown then when dry a wash of Citadel earth wash.



Painted the lighter colour on the rank chevrons and crown, also the shoulder flashes, then a spot of light brown was added to the mix for the pilot wings. The buttons and cap badge was lightly painted with a mix of the gold brown and pearl medium.

Part 2,
When all dry I dry brushed the bust with a mix of white Artist's oils and a spot of Prussian blue.



Now for the sailor.

Started the matelot, face first as usual to give bust some character using Artist's oils and the the base colours using various shade mixes for the uniform using Vallejo acrylics.



Now the work starts

The faces I did all in one go so not to waste the paint mixes, no I kept it to 1940 BEF, Dunkirk period, I will leave you to do the tropical one.

My brushes are always out mate, just the water I have to change.

Nearly finished him, just a bit of touching up.

Geoff - nice job! Just one little detail, the propeller/star badge on the right arm should be red on blue - at least they were on the photo I worked from - cheers!
