I’ve had this one lying around for a fair while.
    It’s the Elan13 Cavalier (54mm).

I rather liked the idea of building him with the pistol, rather than the sword, but needed something for him to shoot at.
Having checked the types of bottles for the period (ECW), I tried finding some on the ‘internettie’, but with no success.
I finally decided to make my own using brass tube, Magic Sculp and brass wire. This was the result … two Onion bottles:-

    IMG_3264r.jpg

For the location I decided to use some gabions. The original was scratchbuilt and a mould made. The mould is a bit old now and results in a lot of air holes, which in turn results in a tedious filling with putty. One day I’ll find the box that’s hiding the original and make a new mould.
With three gabions cast and duly repaired, I set the scene.

    IMG_3265r.jpg

I know he’s a bit close to his target, but he’s a tad short-sighted and really wants to show off his new gun. Anyway, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

All gabions tend to look very similar, but the filling can vary. Therefore my original gabion has a depression in the top to ‘ring the changes’ with the filling.

This is where I’ve got to. The gabions are filled, bottles added and some groundwork in place. The pistol hand is temporarily in place just to see how it will look.

Next task will be cleaning up the figure and getting it ready for priming.

Shaping up Andrew (Great figure as well)

How about changing the apple for a wine bottle? This gives a hint to the viewer that he's a bit 'tiddly' and explains the short-sightedness perhaps? :)

    Cheers

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the encouragement, and excellent suggestion.
I was about to glue the left arm, but I think I'll leave it a while.
Three more lengths of tube cut and initial blobs of MS applied.
One of them should prove useful, and I'll need to hollow out the base, since it will be visible.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

Very nice idea, it looks to be an intersting vignette,. The Paul idea is also very intersting but looking to the box-art of our "hero" looks he is chewing someting.
Hope to see soon more pictures of this work.

I looked at the left arm and decided I’d probably make a hash of removing the apple.
I therefore took a simpler option, made a mould of the hand end, and made a casting.
Now, at least, if I ruined it, I’d have the chance of another go.
Luck was with me and the dremel didn’t slip.
With one of the extra bottles in place, I can finish the trimming and redo the fingers, where necessary.

    IMG_3267-8.JPG

If that works well, I’ll turn to trimming the ‘eating’ bulge on the face.
If not, I can always revert to the original arm with apple, and leave the bulge in place.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Rob, Phil,
    Many thanks for the encouragement.

I've managed to finish the hand with the bottle. It has now been fitted loosely to the kit arm.
This now gives an idea of what it will look like:

    IMG_3271r.jpg

The left cheek has been trimmed. If you see anything wrong, please let me know.
A quick look at the photo shows that both of the bottles on the gabions require some work.
Biggest job is still ahead; that being the trimming of the runners and slivers of thin resin from the extremely delicate looking sword hilt.

My last post had me getting around to trimming the sword.
Everything went OK until I managed to break off one of the quillons, and guess what ... it remained in sight.
However, while trying to glue it back, it suddenly managed to 'tiddly-wink' itself into the nether regions of the room.
I didn't have a suitably thin rod to match the other quillon, but I did have some fine electrical wire which I'd previously used as hair strands on a bust.

    IMG_3282r.jpg

I twisted the fine strands together and coated them with CA glue. A tiny amount of Magic Sculp on the end gave me something that vaguely matched the other quillon.
My smallest drill bit is 0.3mm, and somehow I got a hole drilled into the hilt without breaking anything else.
    This was the end result:

    IMG_3281r.jpg

I've now made a start on painting the base.

    IMG_3280r.jpg

The ground was painted with Humbrol (29) Dark Earth, washed with Van Dyke Brown (oil) and dry-brushed with a light Yellow Ochre.
The stones that were now in high relief were painted randomly with all the Humbrol ranges of stone colours. A final wash of Sepia (oil) pulled everything together.
The gabions were painted with Humbrol (110) Wood and washed with Sepia (oil). Highlights were a mixture of lighter colours of whatever came to hand and looked about right.
The gabion uprights were then touched-in with a a darker colour to differentiate them from the weaves, and all three got another wash of Sepia (oil).

I've made a start on the figure and will post progress once there' something worth showing.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

Thank you for the kind comment Rob.

With the painting roughly started, I put almost everything together loosely to double check the fit.

    IMG_3284r.jpg

Since then I've adjusted the fit of the pistol arm and added a bit more paint.
This is where I am currently.

    Pleased you like him Oda.

    Nearly finished him.
The photo shows one or two areas that require attention.
Then it's just the hat and sword to glue in place (what could possibly go wrong ... ?).
