This is a resin bust by Hawk Miniatures. It was sculpted by Robert Lane.

It is a bust of Cecil Arthur Lewis, MC Lewis flew from 1915 until the end of the war in 1918.

A significant achievement, when the life expectancy of a pilot was measured in days or weeks.

The sculpt was excellent but I found I needed to touch up a couple of spots between the eyes and nose after first prime. Below (I hope...lol )

Lewis was credited with eight kills over the course of the war. He received the Military Cross for actions during the Battle of the Somme.
The sculpt of the helmet and flying coat are very interesting in that they allow for some interpretation as to color and material. The
helmet is common to the era but is described as being lined with rabbit or sheepskin. The coat is interesting because it appears as though many young pilots had the coats custom made to military spec.
I've chosen do use a dark leather, rabbit fur lined, helmet and a lighter leather, Persian Lamb lined flying coat.

I have used Vallejo paint for my base coat and will finish him off in oils. Constructive criticism is always welcome.

A chance to get caught up.

Lewis continued flying into the late 1920's including an attempt to be part of the startup of the first Chinese air line.
he was also one of a small group of men who started the BBC.
Later in life he wrote a book called "Sagittarius Rising". It is a wonderful book filled with inscriptions of early flight, and although he decribes his time in the RAF,
it is more more about the total sensation of the time rather than a purely mechanical description of flying and fighting.

Below are photos of the base coat. I tried using an air brush on the helmet leather and liked the result. I would
need a lot more practice before I would would use it for a finish coat.

Hmmm screwed up again. Above post seems to be a strange looking helmet. The coat was done with brushes and not the air brush as I ran out of nerve.
Here is the helmet and first coat on the face.

Finished up the face with oils the other night and HATED it. About to start over if the humidity in my cellar gets low enough that my hair drier stops generating vapor trails!
