This is my next WIP bust. Another lovely sculpt from Robert Lane and a little out of my comfort zone as there are no defined colour schemes for it so I will have to use my, very unartistic, imagination.

The shield is done. I was going to say ‘crudely’ but I have decided to call it ‘rustic’ instead....... I cannot freehand to save my life.... and it is still a bit wet in the picture.

Anyway, fantastic little bust, let’s see if I can make a decent job of it.

Many thanks Santi, I believe this is a 1/12 scale so not that big but beautifully made. Have fun with the brushes? Oh yes :)

It is a very nice bust Bob. I have no plan, just making it up as I go along. Never realised how tricky a bald or half bald head would be......

Shield looks good so far Graham! Nice bust too I was tempted to get this at Telford. The way I did my shaved head on the Rurik post was glazes of blue black built up to strength. Good luck !

Nice start on the shield Graham - rustic is good and I think it looks great. As Bob says, you are back into painting with a vengeance.

Many thanks Chris. Yep, having great fun at the bench. You can spend years watching others, reading books and trawling YouTube but the best way to learn is get the brushes wet and go for it. Hopefully I will improve but I won’t if I don’t keep painting (y)

Started working on the shirt and just to make it fun.... I am using W&N water mixable oils on the shirt and belts. He has just gone into the airing cupboard to dry out after doing a bit of wet blending on the shirt with some highlights and shadows. Little bit of oil shading done to face too. Hope I can get the hang of this as sitting here lightly tapping a tiny amount of paint into a blend is sooo relaxing. Might need a drying box though.

Well it looks damn good painting to me. I'd like to be at that standard. Time is my biggest problem, but hopefully I can devote more of it to painting in the near future.

    Hi Graham

Catching up here ....nice work on the flesh and the head top ....you certainly are enjoying the benchtime ..good to see

Like the idea of a "rugged" shield design ..nice for going for it

This is scaled at 1/12th ..looking at mine ( unpainted ! ) it's small ..and cute ...like me ...lol

How are you finding the WSO's ...are you blending with water or treating as normal oils ?

    Following with interest

    Thanks for sharing

Thanks Chris. Time is a big thing. When I was working, I would be squeezing the odd hour in maybe three times a week. Since retiing, I have days when I can do a four hour session, or longer, without any disturbances. It makes a huge difference.

Small and cute lol...... mmmmmm, anyway..... WSO. I got the oils a couple of years back but I just couldn’t get my head around using them. I watched a video on YouTube where this guy was highlighting and shading a 1/35 figure using oils. Tiniest amount of paint on the tip of a very small brush then gently stipples to blend. I thought I would try that out on the cheek shading and it worked (sort of) but better than I can get with acrylic. Next thing I knew I was painting the shirt with WSO thinned with water and wet blending the deep shading in. I will be back on it today and see how I get on boosting the highlights on the shirt. Drying time will be an issue, I am a bit impatient, but if I can find something to make a drying box, that may make it more workable.

As usual, I don’t know what I am doing but I never will if I don’t try :)
