Has anyone moved countries with large figure collection?

Discussion in 'General Figure Talk' started by FleurbaixToySoldiers, Feb 19, 2018.

  1. Has anyone ever moved countries with a rather large collection of toy soldiers?

I have a dilemma. I have a rather large collection of my late fathers with just about every type of toy soldier under the sun.. Some of them are very sentimental to me as I remember my father painting and collecting things when I was younger and then of course I took on my father business.

I have the opportunity to move countries at the end of the year, buy a house with a bit of land and some space for my business but I am trying to figure out the logistics of moving what is valuable to me and on selling the stuff that is not and I don't even know where to start.

Are there any members with a largish collection that have moved countries and how did you choose what to bring and what to leave and how did you pack and store everything so that it didn't get broken because honestly if I have to repair thousands of figures that will be the end of me lol.

Look forward to hearing everyone's suggestions

Hi you do have a problem but not undoable
Myself I got wooden tea chests and built a couple of cheap wooden boxes all with tops inside of these I built 1 inch square railings to accommodate a shelve. I then packed first shelve blue tacked the bases got everything settled then filled with foam chips and beanbag filling then placed next shelve in tacked it to the railings then same again until all packed these boxes were then placed in a transport container( 40foot sea container ) with rest of furniture all packed up. I learnt this from my father when he shipped his collection from New Zealand to Australia. I did mine moving from Melbourne to Perth which is about a week on road transport He had one fatality dropped it when he took it out of the crate . Me I had 2, anything that was not based was layered down flat on towels on top of a bed of foam chips then covered with more. We both took every thing that way it was easier to build a stack of what you don't want when you unpack nothing worse than the old saying.............
'I wish I had kept that one' etc ..
Hope this helps It feels like a big endeavour its your dads legacy but as you pack it up slowly over the months you remember the good times have a laugh and it makes it all worth while

I moved city to city a couple of years ago. I spent a few weeks accumulating as many old wooden drawers as I could find. I bluetacked the bases of the figures to the bottom of the drawers, as closely packed as possible and then transported them by car. In your case you could use the same system, fill the gaps with chips and then screw a wooden lid onto each drawer. It is important when unloading the figures to remove the chips very slowly as what is underneath is not immediately visible. Good luck with the move.

A lot easier said than done, I know, but try and move stuff yourself or make sure whoever does it is used to handling figures. I hope that makes sense. The other guys' advice is very sound. Above all, plan and take your time packing.
Do let us know how you get on and what you end up doing.

Just to add to my post it is important that any boxes you use are not able to flex, so that rules out any form of plastic box. Plastic boxes can be used with toy soldiers if they can be laid flat and sandwiched between layers of sponge although I would recommend packing as many items individually as you can, depends how many small boxes you can lay your hands on or purchase.

I moved over 600 figures without any damage but of course I carried them myself.

    Good luck with the move.

  8. Hi Keith

Thank you for your thoughts, I greatly appreciate the comments and your idea of the drawers sounds most interesting.

Yeah don't think I will use plastic boxes for the figures, will let you know how I get on.

Thanks Again for the well wishes.

Not wanting to pour cold water on everything. Just remember that even moving figures from one side of a room to another is fraught with danger.......(y) good luck
