Jan Degryse, a friend of mine from Belgium, has sculpted this nice caricature of a Cossack für me...:

The template was this propaganda poster from the russo-japanese war 1904, I gave to Jan...:

This Cossack will be my next project!

I start with fitting the "Gazirij"-cartridges to the "Kapsitulnij"-bags on his breast. They are made from Aluminum pins...:

Then I added two clearly oversized (caricature!) shoulder boards to the figure, the rank is "Uriadnik", the Cossack terminus for the russian "Unteroffitser" (Sergeant), a word that comes from the german language...:

The monograms of the regiment on the shoulder boards were not sculpted - I will paint them later...

After that the little Cossack was cleaned and primed...:

And now I'm looking forward to painting the figure!

    Well, today I started painting!

But: Just before I paint anything, I have to decide in which chasm I want to put the boy. We are dealing with a caricature - but historically, I would like to have it!

I have decided to give the Cossack in the uniform of the "2nd Dagestan Cavalry Regiment" ((2-й Дагестанский кавалерийский полк/"2-y Dagestanskiy kavaleriyskiy polk")...:

This unity was as famous as notorious!

They were fighters of the mountain population from the (present) Republic of Dagestan in the Caucasus, with Cossacks as so-called "framework staff" (NCO's) and commanded by Russian Cossack Officers.

Together with other cavalry units from Caucasian mountain dwellers and Cossack regiments, the 2nd Dagestan formed the so-called "Wild Division"!

During the First World War the "Wild Division" was a time led by the brother of the Czar, Grand Prince Mikhail Alexandrovich - on the next picture he can be seen in the front right ...:

The riders were equally feared by friends and foes!

The enemy (they fought in the First World War mainly against Kuk troops in Galicia and against the Ottomans in the southern Caucasus foreland) feared their fighting power and cruelty (they rarely made prisoners!), friends were scared about their notorious unbridled discipline.

After the Grand Duke the well-known General Lawr Kornilov ...

... the Dagestans and the "Wild Division" - under his command they took part in the so-called "Kornilov Putsch" against the Kerensky government and followed the general on the part of the "Whites" also in the Russian Civil War. There members of the unit formed his personal bodyguards.

Today, in the Caucasus, a memorial recalls the "Wild Division"!

Of course, there are a lot of pictures in books and on the Internet from such a well-known unit!

These pictures all have the disadvantage, that the "mustache colour" of the Cherkesska on each photo looks different...:

However, by a fortunate coincidence, I am in possession of good color photographs of an original uniform of the "2nd Dagestan Cavalry Regiment" from the First World War, on which the color is right to see ...:

This gulf will wear my Cossack caricature!

By the way, the "1st Dagestanian Cavalry Regiment" carried Chererkesskas in the same color - only the badges were blue, not red!

I started today with the fabric cover, it was red (with the first regiment blue) with yellow badges ...:
First of all an underpaiting with acrylic colors ...:
After drying of the underpainting, I used these oil paints ...
... to finish the fabric cover...:
Glitters unfortunately still a bit - do not disturb you please, the thing has been finished 15 minutes ago ...

    So much for today.

    Hi Martin

Great start , as this guy is a caricature and yes the sculpt is very good but .....I honestly think I might have made the hat a bit more larger and more "wild" ...

Are you adding the additional details on the hat as in the reference pic ?

    Following with fun

Reworked the "Kubanka" cap with "Milliput Superfine White"!

Not it appears more bigger, more shaggy, more "wilder"...:

Here some pics of "exotic" Papachas, worn in the Caucasus Region in past and today. They were my templates when I sculpted...:

After drying of the primer I painted the fur parts with Acrylics...:

I tried to get it near the colour of my template from Dagestan...:

    Now it looks like this...:

What do you think? Hairs and beard dark blonde or grey?

    Martin

For me I would say gray ..he looks an old Cossack and the gray would contrast well with the open mouth colouring and teeth as well

    My thoughts

Most of the time today I needed to paint a realistic "Wodka nose" of our hero!

With the result I am quite satisfied...:
