It looks like the "grasshopper", the mountain howitzer used in all theaters of the war. Hard to tell from that pic. Here are some pics I took from a visit to the 96 battlefield.

This was a bigger field piece.

Mike Stelzel from Michael Roberts has been doing a lot of research on AWI artillery in conjunction with the museums here so I will see if I can get him to chime in.

The piece in the artwork appears to be a howitzer. Because the tube is painted black it may be iron. You can try and goggle American Revolution howitzers and you'll get a variety of photos. I took a bunch at Ft Ligonier about 16 months ago and I'll post the images here. I've discovered a lot of conflicting information on the carriages. I'm researching carriages for the 6lb field gun and I've gotten many different dimensions. 3 different sizes just for the wheels. One of the issues is they would take the original traveling carriage, which was heavy and difficult to move in the colonies, and design it to make it lighter. That resulted in several smaller sizes of the original. Adding to it was that sometimes these version where made in different shops and no one really kept any good records. There is a book called "A Treatise of Artillery 1780 by John Mueller" that can be purchased on line. You might also look for any of the Historical Arms Series. They have/had some booklets on weapons and artillery.

These are photos taken at Ft Ligonier which was a British fort built in Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. The cannons would be the same or very close to those in the AWI. I didn't record what the pieces where or take any measurements. It was a quick trip and I just wanted photos to compare the drawing in Mullers. Not taking the measurements was a big mistake. Later I did take measurements of the American 6 lb 'ers at Guilford Courthouse and they are different that the ones that come out of Mullers. I suspect the guns at Ligoners maybe different as well.

This is a howitzer with brass tube. Probably a 24lb 'der.

6 lb 'der on the traveling carriage. In an effort to reducer weight the ammo boxes were not always added. It's hitched to a limber that was drawn by horses or oxen.

I believe this is a 12lb 'der.

The tube is pretty big so I believe it's a 12lb'der. If you go on Troiani's FB page and ask I'm sure he'll tell you what it is.

I don't know what scale you are planning your vignette but EK Castings do some very nice and very reasonably priced 54 mm cannons that would probably suit the that particular scene .http://www.ekcastings.com/rus/catalog.php?&cat=19

I have never used them myself but they have received good reviews from other members on PF
