So how woukd you go about sculpting one suitable for this bandsman ...or anyone know where I might get one or if anyone happens to have one floating around in the spares box

Any suggestions ...apart from leave it off!

I have a pattern for the basket on my laptop, I'll post it when I get back in, it may help.

Found it! I was going to roll out some clay and cut out the pattern when it was firm enough to shape. If you sculpt the liner first it might help forming the basket over it. All the best.

Same as Scotty said...But must say this is a real tricky one...Try forming the "cup" or red cloth part of the hilt first and leave it to set, then add the metalwork with strips of magic sculp that are almost going off but still workable, glue them onto the "cup"...that's the way I'd approach it mate...Good luck & happy swearing mate:whistle:
    Cheers

Yep - defo make the liner first, then youve got something stable to work on. Try using plastic strip or card for the metalwork, it gives a nice crisp edge...(y)

As a former miniature sculptor, I normally used Sculpey because of it's infinite work time, although it requires oven hardening. Anyway, I would have created a ball of sculpey in the basic shape of the hilt attached to a small mound of the clay on a piece of wood. I would then sculpt the details in the soft clay by "engraving" them or adding new thin rolled pieces to make the metal pieces.

Working on a solid ball is easier than trying to create a hollow ball from the beginning. Once satisfied with the overall piece, I would cut off the hardened hilt from the mound on the piece of wood, since the bottom is more or less flat anyhow. Then using a dremel I would have hollowed out the hilt enough to make it believable. Since you can paint the interior black or dark grey, it doesn't have to be perfect, as it will sort of disappear. Finally add in the sword grip as a separate piece.

    Just an idea.

    Hi Kevin
    Some great Ideas here.
I agree that you should form the red leather pad and then Add the metal hand guard.
To set the pad I use a blob of blue take or playdoe slightly smaller than the finished size and model over this. When your clay etc is hard remove the blue tsk carefully.
A bit simple but it works.

I form the basic shape from milliput, then carve in the detail when it's dry.

I'm just throwing this in, it doesn't look like the 1828 pattern sword he has, it may be the band were still using a regimental pattern. It will save you doing the cut outs. Sorry mate.

    Piccy update

Fairly happy with the overall shape of the inner part , might thin it down a bit more ,, the flatter part will be at the lower edge ....

Making buttons and medals at the moment ..the hilt mght be a job for seeing out 2016!

Going to make the handle as well ...ms currently hardening ..then needs fitting !

It looks the part Kevin......good work Mate.
As you say maybe a little thinner. A little trick, it only needs to be thin on the edges if the sword is not in hand
What scale are you working to?
    All the best

    Hi Keith

Thinned it down a bit will do the edges thinner , scale is about 1/10th

    Thanks for looking in

Great ideas; most of which wouldn't have come to me, but that is why I am not a good sculptor.

There are certainly good ideas from others ..that's what PF is all about , sharing and hopefully giving me more confidence with the magic world of putty..lol

Today is the day for the basket work ..after I have carved the actual handle !

Thanks for looking in and Happy New Year
