I've been missing this work of yours!
The figure is very nice. I like base very much, it's very suitable.
The painting of the boat looks good, but in my opinion you should dark it a little.

It might be ok if u took a shave and still had your ponytail It's still a tad chilly for the bike. Hopefully by the end of the month though... everybody cross their collective fingers for a continued warming trend please.

Thanks pedro, the boat hasn't begun to be painted yet. I just gave it a wash so my old eyes could see how the patch job went. After the pics were taken I primed the new sculpted areas and the lower half of the ship so the painting will start fresh... hopefully tonight.

Please don't apologize Pedro... Actually the sepia wash over a gold brown or yellow ochre would have made a decent wood effect... the wood grain sculpted is really really good. I hope it works out as well when I actually go to paint it

Colin, look on amazon for the paperback edition of "The Long Ships" ( a great book by the way), on the cover there's a great picture of a ship's sail that would make a fantastic shield design.
A mate in our local club has this figure and the title that leaps to mind is "Right you lot, who forgot to pack the bloody dingy?"

Update...
I think I have the ship about 90% done. The Viking's hand needs to be done and I may play with the washes some more. I was going for the sea worn look by making the washes a bit more blotchy rather than smooth to make the wood look weathered and water logged. Then again, what I know about sea fairing craft couldn't fill a thimble.

The water is pretty much done.. based with Dark Prussian Blue, brought up by adding Turquiose, Grey Blue, Sky blue and finally drybrushing the tips of the waves with Sky Blue, Sky Blue and White and finally White. Then I washed with Dark Blue and Dark Green inks... the green doesn't show worth a damn in the pics but it's there... honest.

I tried to keep the water darkish as he's supposed to be sailing the North sea...

Thoughts or tips?

Hi Colin,
I love this - most probably too late but the bow of the ship seems to be quite deep in the water. When the bow is cutting through the waves they split in front of the bow. To suggest deep water I would add some greys and greens in the cavities of your waves.

Thanks Martin, I totally agree. In the first or second post of this thread I mentioned how I wasn't sure how to present this as the sculpt of the prow was at an odd angle and elevation. I decided to go ahead with the water anyway to at least give context to the scene. There is some green washes in the waves, much more than what shows in the pics, but I don't think it would hurt to add some more.

Hey all
At this point I'll call the ship and water done. Some odds and ends left on the Viking, should be done by tomorrow.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions please feel free... I want to get him into the Hamilton show a week today so if I need to address anything... speak up!

It is looking very well Colin. I like this figure and you're doing a great job.
Although I like the idea of the water my first thought was 'that ship is sinking'. No problem at all with that, just a different interpretation of the figure: this captain is heroically going under with his ship. If you would want to emphasize this, you could add some water around his feet. Up to you of course, just an idea. Feel free to ignore!

The figure is done now, but my computer has died on me... I've had to commandeer my wife's 'puter to answer here. Should have a new laptop in a day or two to get some proper pictures posted of the final product. The last set of pics posted were off my phone... maybe I'll try to take some pics with my phone later tonight.

Adrian, the position of the ship's prow made it difficult to mount. I didn't want to just mount it plainly on the base... it just didn't look finished. I figured the water gave context to the scene... let's take it that the ship is at the instant plowing through a tall wave... not sinking. I think our captain looks a tad too relaxed to be on a sinking ship.
