    Hey again folks,

I'm calling time on this one, its been a very enjoyable project. It was my first Tommy's War figure and I'm sure there will be many more in the near future as this was a joy to paint.

He is painted mainly in oils with acrylics only being used as an undercoat on his pick helve handle and rifle. I used a limited palette for this piece comprising the following W&N Artists Oils:

Yellow/Gold Ochre (I switched halfway through)
    Blue Black
    Alizarin Crimson
    Burnt Umber
    Titanium White

I might switch out the Burnt Umber for Burnt Sienna for the next project as the BU dries a little too fast for me so I found myself remixing certain colours every few days. Its not always easy to get a match but, admittedly, a lot simpler than it could be due to the limited palette.

Anyhoo, here are some pics. I hope you like him as much as I enjoyed painting him :)

It came out fantastic. I often get asked about making huge diorama bases with dozens of figures all charging, but in my humble opinion the single figure, when posed and painted correctly (as here) has far atmosphere and captures the real truth of what life would be for the average soldier of WW1 - 99% boredom and 1% terror!

    Great job Billy!

I agree, one or two figures on a relatively small base can tell a huge story if done correctly. I'll be bringing this one up to Darlington this weekend, I'll pop by your table so you can have a closer look before I put him in the comp :)

    Hi Billy,

Not just a nice figure, but beautiful presentation too.
The quality of the photo and lighting give the impression , to one who has seen it many times, of him looking down as a flare goes off to maintain some night vision.

    I really like this.

    Paul.
