This is where I am at at this time period.
If you can find an old Historex Catalogue, it has a tremendous amount of information on Horses and Napoleonic uniforms and gear. I find it invaluable for different horses. See the photo's Also

Horse colour.

Blue/Black with shadows in Lamp black. The underside belly and behind the front and back legs was dry brushed with Burnt sienna to give those areas a different tone, as per regular horses. Horse eyes are lamp black from the original colour. Iris is a dark brown (Mars Brown) and almost fills the socket and has a white catch light.
A very little yellow added to white (almost white) for the corner of the eyes. Very small as the horse is not frightened and the whites of the eyes will not show. Gloss coat added.
Highlights are Ivory black with Flesh added. Horse has four white socks and I made them a little different and tried to show a transition of hair from black to white. Hooves are Yellow ochre with A little burnt umber added. Bottom of the hooves are steel with black nail marks. And inside of bottom of hoof is same colour with lots more raw umber added to give a brownish colour.







Firstr saddle blanket is a dark brown made from Mars brown and Burnt sienna with a little Raw umber.
Highlights are yellow ochre and white.
Patern is Royal blue stripe with variations and Cadmium orange decoration.

Second quilted blanket is Cadmium Red deep with veridian added to get a dark red. Highlights are cadmium red deep and then cadmium red for final highlights. The shadow colour was deepend to make the quilt pattern and the the squares were highlighted on both tops and shadowed on the two bottoms trying to keep the folds of the cloth also. The folds shadows are a glaze of Raw Umber.








The Prince has been attached to a custom base to work on with out disturbing the engravings.
The helmet and leg armour has been polished with a burnishing tool and a toothpick. Then given a coat of Gunze Sanyo smoke and lined with Raw Umber. The rest of the figure will be brush painted with Mr Surfacer 1200 diluted at least 20% so as to not fill in the details.













Inside of mouth is flesh. Teeth are off white with a yellow (Naples yellow deep) and burnt sienna added painted over them when dry, to give an oldish look and then highlighted with almost white with a small amount of yellow added. Raw umber lines added to teeth for separation.



There is no highlights as yet on any of the polished armour and these will be done at the last step.



I thought it best to paint the inside of the horse cape before attaching to the horse. This way there would not be any spots unreachable and also eliminate handling the horse that would now be very heavy. The model box foam seemed a nice cushion so as not to wear the engravings off.
The yellows are Cadmium Yellow Pale, Naple Yellow Deep and White and Burnt Sienna for Shadows added to the yellows. A touch of Lemon Yellow for highlights. The yellow took forever to dry and finally put it in the crock pot while the missus was shopping. Took about 6 hours to dry on low.

This was my first Historex catalogue and one I still have,it has a wealth of information in it and was my first introduction to oil painting back in 1986,highly recommended if you can get hold of one

I treasure all my Historex catalogues too - very useful especially in the days pre-internet and before I had much in the way of reference.

Me, too, got them all, and still get great joy from Eugene Leliepvre's techniques. As to the figure....Yikes! That's a whole mass of detail to work around Following this with great interest.

I'm also doing this kit just a heads up you sure you can get the rider on with the front and back saddle on as I've left mine off until he is on and then I'll put them in place

Welcome to the Planet. I see you are from England? We will be there in a couple of weeks for vacation.
I have tried mine on the saddle and he seems to go on O.K. but a tight squeeze. I checked while the glue was soft on the second section of the saddle.
I think it will be easier to leave the shield off and add after he is in place and the rains added. Also add the stirrups before the glue completely sets up so that the legs will position correctly allowing room for the stirrup straps to go along side the legs.
Pietro sent me a couple of overhead photo's of the reins attached to the shield arm to make things clearer. I will post those with my next chapter which will be the final. If you would like them sooner please let me know and I will email them to you.
