Following on from the previous post,i've now progressed to the tunic,i've had some members asking for mixes I use when painting my british Napoleonic reds, well I've added some pictures below of the first 2 stages of how I paint this, however this is not the finished tunic,as I will add some wear and weathering in the next update, thats when i'll be happy to move on with the other details.

In these first photos here I have made up a mix of 60% Windsor orange and 40% cadmium red,i then also use a mix of just Windsor orange, these 2 mixes are applied onto the acrylic undercoated tunic, the orange is applied to the high areas and the orange / red mix to the base areas,to make it easier to follow I have added the mixes to numbers, anyone familiar to the works of shep paine will follow my meaning.

No 1 - Extreme highlight areas
No 2 - Medium highlight areas
No 3 - Base colour areas
    N0 4 - Medium shadow areas
No 5 - Deep Shadow areas

the 2 mixes I've used here are No 3 and No 2,laid in and blended, this I then leave 24 hrs.

Following on from the previous session,i now mix 60% naples yellow with 40% Windsor orange and call this my No1 mix, this I will use for the extreme light areas,i also make a mix of 40% Windsor orange + 40% cadmium red and 20% chrome green, this is mixed to a dark redish shadow colour, this I will call my No 4 mix,i then lay these mixes into the required areas and blend.
I NEVER use black or blue for shading my reds or umbers as they make the colours look muddy.

Youre probably asking where No5 mix is,i tend to leave this last as this will be the really dark areas like under arms, tight creases and lining,i don't like working with too many colours at the same time.
Any lights you may have lost during blending you can just go back and add them in.

Once I'm happy with the tunic,i'll add wear and weathering to the tunic.
As I like to portray my pieces in a battlefield environment I like to fade my red uniforms,i don't like them as if they've just come off saville row,if you look at the works of the great artist Bill Horan and all his colonial, napoleonic subjects you'll understand what I mean.

    Happy painting,Brian

    Hi Brian.
That faded look is very effective (and Horanesque)
Great instructional too for some one like me -none too confident with oils.
