Hi all, I am working on that outstanding piece by FeR Col. Chamberlain at Gettysburg ( I think there are at least 50 of us working on this one right now ). Sorry for the bad pics, I will do better upon completion. Who else is working on this one? I have some clean up and detail work and of course that wonderful flag to do yet, but am happy so far.

Your painting is great, but the color of the uniform?

Maybe Chamberlain had his tailor use that color for some reason?

I admit I'm partially color blind and my eyes are not 100%, but the uniform color looks brownish grey. I'm also not familiar with Col. Chamberlain's story other than the incidents depicted in the movie Gettysburg. I know his 20th Maine Rgt held the Union left against repeated determined charges up Little Round Top hill by two Alabama regiments. When it ran out of ammunition, Chamberlain ordered a bayonet counterattack, driving those regiments from the field.

Attached is a photo of re-enactor clothing for the 8th Maine Rgt on a dummy. The photo came from TripAdvisor.com. In this photo, I see the more normal Federal colors - dark blue coat and light to medium blue trousers.

    Color-blind and confused in Omaha,
    Dan

Thanks for the comments fellows, Dan, the uniform is a dark blue....I do not see where you get brown grey out of that, must be my photography skills again. I was aware that Union officers wore dark blue but thanks for the pic. Great reference. Off to strip it and try again.

    Hi Steve,

Really like the face. I have this figure primed and will start soon so will be watching you for any tips or help for mine. It looks like your Colonel Eagles are gold, should be silver. It may be the picture, could not tell for sure. Hope you had a great Christmas!

    Looking good Steve,
I think your pics don't do your piece justice. I am of the understanding that the Union blue is so dark as to almost be black. Painting that damn near black blue is a bitch... to realistic and it makes for a drab, dark figure while super high contrast can sometimes take away from the actual dark dark blue we are trying to achieve...
All that being said, I like the balance you have achieved here... Nice.

Look forward to seeing this done, with the huge banner (of course it hurt to see that banner at the end of the Junior game this afternoon )

Looks good in my eyes. About the dark blue there are numerous sources on the net about original pieces that show the dark blue shade of the uniforms.
As one example Stonewall Jacksons Pre-Civil-War uniform:
