Been in and out of jobs due to mental illness.
Joined the Royal Navy in 83 suffered a serious head injury and was medically discharged in 84.
Spent a while homeless and when sorted out I worked as a care assistant on YTS.
My next job was as a labourer on another government scheme.
I then worked as a board marker in a bookie's,lost that job to satellite tv.
    I then worked as a sewing machinist(sewing women's knickers)lost that job.
I then got a job sewing leather handles for pet cages.lost that job, company went bust.
I then worked making cassetes(music and games).
    Worked as a barman.
I then did a lot of voluntary work for the British Trust of Conservation Volunteers.
Have not worked in the last 14 years probably never will again(due to medication)
In between these jobs I spent about 3/4 years in a psychiatric ward.
So never really had an occupation as such.
And now I just make models.
    All the best.
    Ralph.

The rule is "finger off the trigger while on the move";) - and the pic was taken 2008 - I survived so far:) (the position was required to avoid a "safety violation" on the shooting range which would have invited a lot of push ups)

It's out of limits for those kind of fun and games Ron, unless it was an emergency of course.

Nice thread, really fun to see what everyone does outside of the hobby.

I'm a mechanical engineer, although most of my work is on the computer (numerical simulations, finite element models, etc). My area of expertise is computational solid mechanics. For a while I worked on projects that involved projectiles and ballistic shielding. Currently I'm at a company that does a lot of work with blast. We evaluate structures and design new ones or retrofits in order to survive explosions (mostly of the accidental variety, though not always) and other threats.

I have been an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for nearly 33 years. Law enforcement has been a challenging but rewarding career. I have indeed been blessed.

A few years back, Roger sent me a little film clip of a day boating on the North Sea in gentle swells. Every 30 seconds or so the camera pointed at blue sky alternating with grey metal floor - blue then grey; blue then grey. From time to time the horizon also turned sideways, alternating direction. :yuck:

Lost my copy. Do you still have that Roger?

While I was in USAF and later when I was with Union Pacific Railroad, I used to dread cocktail parties and similar social gatherings, because invariably I was asked, "So, what do you do for a living?" Gulp. :cautious:

I did roughly the same thing for the military and the railroad - workplace health and safety - so that's how I'd answer the question. This brought only clouds behind the eyes of the listener; no lights. o_O

50% would then make their excuses and depart, most of them to the bar.

The remaining 50%, being made of sterner stuff, would ask a follow-up, "Well, uh...what does that involve?"

Best estimate, 10% really wanted to hear an answer and the remainder were just being polite.

Answer: "In our repair shops, during track and signal (or runway) repairs and during our operations, industrial chemicals are used, potentially hearing damaging noise is produced and maybe even some ionizing and/or nonionizing radiation may be emitted. I measure employee exposures, assess and control risk and communicate results with management and workers." [I had this little monologue memorized complete with facial expressions, changes in speech volume and tone, hand movements, etc.]

About 5% responded with something like, "Sounds fascinating!" and meant it (I think.) This was often followed up by, "How do I get into that job?"

The balance looked longingly at the bar, checked their watch and/or said something like, "Hey, there's ______, I've been trying to see her/him all week. Excuse me."

I got so fed up with these responses, I once tried, "I'm a Parapsychologist. I do psychic research and investigate the paranormal." Now that was a fun party!!!

Retired since 2013 and thoroughly enjoying life. Cocktail parties hold no terror for me now!

    All the best,
    Dan

Well whatever you do Dan don't tell anyone you do figure modelling as a hobby on the side........I think we've all seen that "Jesus H Christ this guy is Norman effing Bates" look in the faces of anyone we've tried to explain our "perversion" to.
